Ruling on Wearing the Engagement and Wedding Rings

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The following message was sent by one of the female listeners, (A. A. 'A) from al-Sharqiyah. Our sister has a set of questions. She began her message by saying: First, I thank the program for the valuable fatwas it provides us, and may Allah reward the distinguished scholars with the best reward for their kindness in answering our questions, and may Allah reward you with good.
I request that my following questions be presented to His Eminence Shaykh 'Abd al-'Aziz ibn Baz: Is wearing the ring for women a Christian innovation? Because I read that the engagement or wedding ring for a man, even if it is silver, and also for a woman, is a Christian innovation. Is this correct?
Answer: Regarding the ring the questioner is asking about, we do not know of any basis for it. What appears to us from that is that it involves imitating the disbelievers, because it is among their customs, as far as we have been informed. Therefore, it should not be adopted. The indication of marriage is through the proposal and the agreement between the suitor and the one being proposed to, and that is sufficient without the need for a ring. Once the matter is completed with the legal contract, everything is concluded. As for the ring, there is no need for it, and there is no need to imitate the enemies of Allah, whether the Christians or others. It is obligatory to avoid resembling the enemies of Allah in everything. Yes.
