The questioner : May Allah reward you. This person asks: What is the ruling on a wife who requests to live separately with her husband alone, without his mother, given the harm she suffers from her husband’s mother, knowing that the mother is a widow and has no one to support her other than her son?

The Shaykh : It is obligatory for the husband in such a situation to look into the problem occurring between his wife and his mother and try to fix it to the best of his ability. As long as the mother is in this state, if the fault lies with the mother, he should ask her to be kind to his wife and to overlook her faults. If the fault lies with the wife, he should compel her to remove this fault, because he is her authority. If it is not possible to reconcile them, the problem can be solved by having him take his wife out of the house and bring a Muslim female servant with her, along with her mahram (a relative one may not marry), to stay with his mother.
