The questioner : I asked my employer for permission to take the cost of transportation from the shop's account, and he told me: "You may take from five to six riyals per day." So, if I ride for less than that, do I have the right to take the difference?

The Shaykh : If this man who gave you a fixed amount did so as a precaution, then it is not permissible for you to take what is in excess, because his giving it to you as a precaution indicates that he expects the actual cost to be less than that.
As for if he gave it to you on the condition that you secure your own transportation for less or more, then what is in excess is yours. Nevertheless, I say: if there is an excess, the complete way to be free of blame is to inform him and say, "You gave me five, for example, and I hired a ride for four." In that case, he has the choice: if he wishes, he can absolve you of the remainder, and if he wishes, he can take it from you, if his intention was that he gave you the five as a precaution and expected the consumption to be less than five. However, if he gave it to you with the intention that it is yours and that you secure your transportation as you wish, I think he should not take the excess from you.

The questioner : May Allah bless you.
