What are the rulings related to image-making regarding its permissibility and prohibition, and the issue of intention in it?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The questioner : The issue of image-making: many people err in understanding what is intended, O Shaykh, regarding the issue of intention in image-making and what is meant by it?

The Shaykh : Image-making, image-making by hand in the form of, for example, this is undoubtedly forbidden if the image is of an animal, such as making an image of a lion or a horse or the like from plaster or other materials. This is forbidden, and its doer falls under the curse of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) in his saying (peace and blessings be upon him) in the hadith of Abu Juhayfa that he
He cursed the image-makers.
and informed them that they are the most severely punished people on the Day of Resurrection. This figurative representation is realized because it is a body with limbs and a head, so it is a complete imitation of the creation of Allah.
The scholars (may Allah have mercy on them) differed regarding the colored image that has no body: does it fall under the hadith or not? Some said that it is included, and some said that it is not included.
And the correct view is that it is included in the curse of the image-makers, because Muslim narrated from the hadith of Abu al-Hayyaj from Ali ibn Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said to him:
Shall I not send you with what the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) sent me with? Do not leave any image except that you erase it, and do not leave any raised grave except that you level it.
and in another wording:
Do not leave an image without obliterating it
Sahih Muslim 969a, 969b
.
And because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)

. When he saw the carpet that had images on it, displeasure was evident on his face, and he did not enter the house, and he said: "The people of these images will be punished, and it will be said to them: 'Bring to life what you have created.'" Here there are two things: The first thing: the image on a three-dimensional statue, this is forbidden without doubt. The second thing: the image by coloring by hand, this is a matter of difference, and the correct view is that it is forbidden and included in the curse. The third thing: image-making by modern devices in which the human has no role, but... This is an important issue we are discussing regarding image-making. Okay, the third thing: image-making by modern devices—peace be upon you—by modern cameras. These cameras are of two types: a type that requires developing and manual adjustment, so this is closer to being forbidden because the person has work with his hand in it. And a type that is instant and does not require work from the person, so this does not fall under the forbidden image-making because the man did not actually create an image. Image-making is the activation of what is imaged, meaning: making it in a specific form, and I did not do anything; the most that is there is that I directed certain lights onto a body and this body was imprinted in it. For this reason, this image-making happens from a blind man and from a person in darkness, and he has no work in it; we cannot include it in image-making, and it is not said "we took a picture." But some people are unaware of the difference between image-making and possessing the image, and they think that they are two things that always go together, but they are not. For this reason, the jurists distinguished between them and said: Image-making is forbidden, and using what contains an image is forbidden; they made image-making one thing and using what contains an image another thing. So we say: Possessing the image is not permissible except out of necessity, or if the image is not given attention, as found in cartons and cans of some beverages; this is not given attention and is not intended, but the thing that is intended is what preserves this; it is not permissible except out of necessity. And based on this, what some people do now of taking pictures for remembrance and possessing them to remember, to remember their children when they are young, or to remember a trip they took with their companions, this is not permissible because the angels do not enter a house in which there is an image. Some people may say: Is this a contradiction? How do you say at the time of taking the picture that this is not image-making, and then say that possessing this is forbidden except for a need? We say: There is no contradiction, because the image exists now, even if by device, and it is said: This is an image, do not possess it. And the evidence for this is that a man faces a mirror, for example, and if he faces the mirror, it is said: This in the mirror is an image, even though it does not remain. So the image is broader than being made by hand or made by device, and the generality of the hadith "The angels do not enter a house in which there is an image" includes this and that. Yes. And what is this refrigerator? The questioner: O Shaykh. The Shaykh: Yes. The questioner: Some people... We asked one who greeted us, he works in the department. The Shaykh: Yes. The questioner: The manager of the department. The Shaykh: Yes. The questioner: So he found, meaning, above the desk, pictures of the kings. What does he do with them? He is obligated...
