The questioner : At one of the wedding occasions, my father and I were among the attendees. When the groom's relatives arrived at the venue and the number was complete, one of the brothers, may Allah reward him with good, stood up and improvised a long speech. I recall that it was advice in the way of warning. In truth, if the speech had been short, it would have been more effective in its impact, but due to its length and his citing of hadiths, the speech was prolonged. So one of the attendees stood up and interrupted him, saying: "Enough, enough, what you have presented is sufficient, may Allah reward you with good." The speaker became angry and said: "It is as if you do not love the remembrance of Allah." Is there a sin on the one who said: "Enough" or "It is sufficient"? We want to find from the honorable Shaykh that we are rewarded in this matter?

The Shaykh : I say, and upon you be peace and the mercy and blessings of Allah, O questioner. And regarding what you mentioned about the action of some of the brothers, that they stand on the wedding night speaking and preaching to the people, there is no doubt that those who did this intended good, reminding the people and admonishing them. However, it is befitting for the one who admonishes people to be wise in his admonition, so he chooses the appropriate time, the appropriate place, and the appropriate situation, and even the appropriate people. For a person may be in a state of readiness to accept advice, admonition, and reminder at some times, and not be prepared for it at others, so his state must be considered.
Likewise, there may be some places where it is not befitting to speak because the people are occupied with something else, so they become bored and feel constrained by it. And Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) said:
The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) would vary our admonition for fear of boredom upon us كان رسول الله صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم يتخولنا بالموعظة مخافة السآمة علينا
Al-Mustadrak lil-Hakim 27:20
And this is wisdom. And there is no doubt that wedding nights are nights of enjoyment, joy, and happiness. For this reason, a dispensation was granted for singing and the hand drum on that night in the spirit of joy and happiness, but on the condition that it be with the hand drum and not the drum, and that the singing be pure and free from temptation. If the people are in this state of readiness and their souls are prepared for joy and happiness and for meeting one another, and perhaps one of them has met his brother and has not seen him for a long time, so he rejoices in meeting him and talks to him about his circumstances and those of his family, then when this admonition comes, they become bored of it and weary of it.
So it is befitting for a person to seek the appropriate time, the appropriate place, and the appropriate situation, because the objective is for the people to accept it, turn toward it, and be prepared to hear what is conveyed to them, and to benefit from it. If this brother who reminds, may Allah reward him with good, had been concise and limited himself to the most important matters, because the time does not suit prolonging, I say if he had limited himself to the important or most important matters, because the time does not suit prolonging, it would have been better for him.
And I see in this occasion that no one should speak unless he sees that the people are prepared for it, by them asking him to speak, or the host asking him to speak, or a questioner asking him about a matter and he speaks in a loud voice so that the people benefit. This is good, and the people will be closer to acceptance than to turning away. And likewise, if he sees a wrong and stands up and speaks, admonishes, and advises, this is also appropriate, for every situation has its own discourse. And we ask Allah the Exalted to make us all among the guides who are guided, the successful in wisdom, mercy, and fear.

The questioner : O Allah, amen. May Allah reward you with good, O honorable Shaykh.
