Your Eminence, it passed in some of our lessons that one who claims descent from other than his father is blameworthy. What is your opinion regarding one who claims descent from his paternal grandfather, even though some people belittle his father because his grandfather is more famous than his father?
The Shaykh : As for claiming descent from the senior grandfather due to his fame and preeminence among his people, while clarifying in another place that he is his grandfather, there is nothing wrong with that. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:Jami` at-Tirmidhi 1688Sahih (Darussalam), even though the father of the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) was named 'Abd Allah. However, he claimed descent from his grandfather due to his fame and preeminence among his people, while knowing that he was the son of 'Abd Allah. But if one claims descent from his grandfather while forgetting his father and does not claim descent from him at any time, then that is not permissible.
