What is the ruling on one who traces his lineage to his grandfather rather than his father?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The questioner : May Allah forgive you. Some people prefer to trace their lineage to their grandfather...?

The Shaykh : It is well known that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) traced his lineage to his grandfather 'Abd al-Muttalib, saying:
I am the son of 'Abd al-Muttalib, I am the Prophet, I do not lie. أنا ابن عبد المطلب أنا النبي لا كذب
So, if it is in the context of boasting and his grandfather is more famous than his father, there is no harm. However, he should not trace his lineage to him exclusively to the point where he is not known by any other name. This is what is meant by the hadith.
It is like when a person sometimes traces his lineage to his tribe, which is broader than his grandfather or his father's grandfather, and the like.
