Explanation of the Book of Ablution, the Full Ritual Bath, Menstruation, and Dry Ablution-06a

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The reciter: Abu Nu'aym narrated to us, saying: Mas'ar narrated to us, saying: Ibn Jabir narrated to me, saying: I heard Anas say:
The Prophet (ﷺ) used to take a bath with one Sa` up to five Mudds (1 Sa` = [??] Mudds) of water and used to perform ablution with one Mudd of water. كان النبي صلّى الله عليه وسلم يغسل أو كان يغتسل بالصاع إلى خمسة أمداد ويتوضأ بالمد
Sahih al-Bukhari 201
.

The Shaykh : The author (may Allah have mercy on him) intended in this chapter to clarify that a person should be moderate in using water for wudu, for the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would take a bath with one sa' to five mudds. The sa' of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) is four mudds, and he would perform wudu with one mudd, which is a quarter of a sa'. This is very little; if you were to see the mudd of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), it would resemble the cup a person drinks from when he is thirsty, and yet it suffices for wudu. The sa' suffices for the bath because he would scoop the water.
As for our current time, is one mudd sufficient for wudu? The tap is running, or is it the sa'? In truth, can it be said that this is an excess beyond what is prescribed, or is it wastefulness?
One should look at it: if a person does not wash the limbs except in accordance with what the Sunnah has brought, then if he pours the water, it cannot be contained or controlled. However, if a person performs wudu from a vessel from which he scoops, he will know.
So if someone asks, what is the sa' of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)?
We say that the sa' of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) is among the known measures we have now: two kilograms and forty grams of dense wheat, meaning the dense type. This is done by placing wheat, as the jurists described, in a vessel of dense wheat and weighing it. If this amount of weight is reached, then that is the sa'.
It has been facilitated for us a measure said to be based on the mudd of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), engraved with the inscription: "This mudd is from so-and-so to so-and-so to so-and-so to Zayd ibn Thabit to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)." It is made of copper. We measured its capacity and found it close to, or matching, what the jurists (may Allah have mercy on them) said. We made another measure from it, which we manufactured here. So now we have a measure for the sa' and a measure for the mudd.
The student: We want to see it, O Shaykh?

The Shaykh : All right, we will bring it, if Allah wills. We will bring it.
