Explanation of the Book of Ablution, Ghusl, Menstruation, and Tayammum-09a

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The reciter: Muhammad ibn Muqatil narrated to us, saying: Sufyan narrated to us from Mansur from Sa'id ibn 'Ubaydah from al-Bara' ibn 'Azib, who said: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
When you come to your bed, perform wudu' as you do for prayer إذا أتيت مضطجعك فتوضأ وضوءك للصلاة
.The Shaykh : Perhaps you did not know that the one on the right of the Messenger was an Arab and the one on his left was Abu Bakr, until 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), when the Messenger intended to give to the Arab, said: "This is Abu Bakr," intending to alert the Arab. But the Arab did not care, because he did not want to prefer anyone over the Messenger. Yes.

The questioner : ... .

The Shaykh : Yes, from al-Bara' ibn 'Azib?
The reciter: From al-Bara' ibn 'Azib, who said: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
When you come to your bed, perform wudu' as you do for prayer, then lie down on your right side, and then say: "O Allah, I submit my face to You, I entrust my affair to You, and I cast my back upon You, seeking hope and fearing You. There is no refuge and no escape from You except to You. O Allah, I believe in Your Book which You revealed and in Your Prophet whom You sent." If you die during that night, you will die upon the fitrah (the innate natural disposition). And make these the last words you speak. He said: "So I repeated them to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and when I reached 'O Allah, I believe in Your Book which You revealed and Your Messenger,' he said: 'No, but Your Prophet whom You sent.'"
.

The Shaykh : May Allah send prayers and peace upon him. This is among the etiquettes of sleep: that a person should sleep in a state of purity. This is because the sleeper is exposed to being taken by Allah (Mighty and Majestic), as Allah the Exalted said:
Allah takes the souls at the time of their death, and those that do not die [He takes] during their sleep. Then He keeps those for which He has decreed death and releases the others for a specified term الله يتوفى الأنفس حين موتها والتي لم تمت في منامنها فيمسك التي قضى عليها الموت ويرسل الأخرى إلى أجل مسمى
[Az-Zumar 39:42]
It is necessary to spend the night in a state of purity. This becomes more emphasized when a person has intercourse with his wife; he should not sleep except in a state of purity, at least with wudu'. It is derived from this that it is a recommended practice (sunnah) to lie on the right side, because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) commanded it. The reason for this is said to be that since the heart is on the left side, if a person sleeps on the left side, he falls into sleep more deeply because the heart remains relaxed and lowered. If he sleeps on the right side, the heart hangs, which makes it easier for him to wake up quickly. It is also said that the wisdom in this is that the opening of the stomach is on the right side, so if a person sleeps and his powers are at rest, and the opening of the stomach is on the right side, that facilitates digestion. In any case, it is necessary for us, when we sleep on the right side, not to focus on these explanations, which may be weak. We should focus on the fact that we sleep on the right side in obedience to the command of the Messenger (may the prayer and peace of Allah be upon him). If physical benefit follows, that is a blessing from Allah.
