The questioner : My uncle borrowed a large sum from the bank and then repaid it after a period with interest that benefits the bank. Is there a sin on my uncle? And on whom does the sin fall in such a case?

The Shaykh : Yes, there is a great and enormous sin on whoever deals in riba (usury or interest). There has come a warning regarding riba that has not come for any other sin except shirk (associating partners with Allah). Allah Blessed and Exalted is He said:
(278) O you who have believed, fear Allah and give up what remains [due to you] of interest, if you should be believers. (279) And if you do not, then be informed of a war [against you] from Allah and His
[Al-Baqarah 2:278-279]
And who is able to declare war against Allah and His Messenger? He the Exalted said:
But if you repent, you may have your principal - [thus] you do no wrong, nor are you wronged.
[Al-Baqarah 2:279]
And Allah the Sublime and Exalted said:
Those who consume interest cannot stand [on the Day of Resurrection] except as one stands who is being beaten by Satan into insanity. That is because they say, "Trade is [just] like interest." But Allah has permitted trade and has forbidden interest. So whoever has received an admonition from his Lord and desists may have what is past, and his affair rests with Allah. But whoever returns to [dealing in interest or usury] - those are the companions of the Fire; they will abide eternally therein.
[Al-Baqarah 2:275]
And He the Exalted said:
(130) O you who have believed, do not consume usury, doubled and multiplied, but fear Allah that you may be successful. (131) And fear the Fire, which has been prepared for the disbelievers. (132) And obey Allah and the Messenger that you may obtain mercy.
[Ali 'Imran 3:130-132]
And it is established in "Sahih Muslim" in the hadith of Jabir from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) that he cursed the one who eats riba, the one who gives it, his two witnesses, and his scribe, and he said:
They are all the same.
So the one who eats riba is within the curse of Allah, and the one who gives riba, who is the one who hands it over to the taker, is within the curse of Allah, and the two witnesses of riba are within the curse of Allah, and the scribe of riba is within the curse of Allah. So the Muslim man should repent to Allah the Mighty and Majestic, and he should avoid riba, and he should know that the provision of Allah the Exalted is not attained by His disobedience, and that wealth from a good earning, even if it is little, is better than wealth from a bad earning, even if it is much. And let him know that the bad earning, if a person gives it in charity, it is not accepted from him, and if he spends it, he is not blessed in it, and if he leaves it behind, it will be a provision for him to the Fire. So as long as a person is in a respite and as long as he is alive, let him repent to Allah and seek forgiveness from Allah for what has occurred from him of riba and what has passed. So we hope that Allah the Sublime and Exalted will pardon your father for it, and that He will guide us and him to a good life and a good earning. Indeed, He is Generous and Noble.

The questioner : May Allah bless you. The listener is a resident in the State of Kuwait, Husayn Muhammad Abu Abd al-Rahman, says.
