The reciter: Alī ibn ‘Abd Allāh narrated to us, saying: Sufyān narrated to us, saying: Al-Zuhrī narrated to us from ‘Āṭah ibn Yazīd al-Laythī from Abū Ayyūb al-Anṣārī that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
When you go to the place of relief, do not face the qiblah and do not turn your backs to it, but face east or west. Abū Ayyūb said: When we came to al-Shām, we found toilets built facing the qiblah, so we turn away and seek forgiveness from Allah the Exalted. إذا أتيتم الغائط فلا تستقبلوا القبلة ولا تستدبروها ولكن شرقوا أو غربوا قال أبو أيوب: فقدمنا الشام فوجدنا مراحيض بنيت قبل القبلة فننحرف ونستغفر الله تعالى
. And from al-Zuhrī from ‘Āṭah, he said: “I heard Abū Ayyūb from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) the same.”
