The Shaykh :"This, and why did not his companions come to him *** complaining of the wrath of the wicked, seducer?"
It means: Why did not his companions come to him when they were afflicted by the wrath of war or other calamities to complain to him? Among the greatest of what afflicted them was what occurred during the days of al-Hurrah, namely the great killing, looting, plundering, and violation of sanctities. Yet, despite that, they did not come to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) to complain to him. Had he been alive, they would have come to him to complain to him of this affliction.
"When that was their custom and their Prophet *** was alive, witnessing them with their own eyes"
What is the custom? It is the habit. It means that it was their habit, while the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was alive, to turn to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) for rulings and fatwas among them, and when affliction came, they would return to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him).
