(Mentioning a jurisprudential issue: whether wudu' ends at the elbows and ankles or extends to the upper arms and lower legs, and mentioning the stronger position in the issue and explaining the Hanbali school's position on it)

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : Is it recommended to go beyond the place of the obligation, or is it not recommended? That is, should a person, when performing wudu', wash the upper arm as he washes the forearm, and wash the lower leg as he washes the foot?
There is a difference of opinion, and the well-known position in our Hanbali school is that it is recommended to add to the place of the obligation, but Ibn al-Qayyim says:
"The stronger, more correct view is that our ablution extends *** to the elbows, and likewise to the ankles."
The stronger position in reasoning and the stronger in evidence, the stronger in both reasoning and evidence, is that it extends to the ankle in the leg and to the elbow in the hand.
"This is what the Merciful One has defined in the *** Qur'an; do not deviate from the Qur'an."
Because Allah said:
and your forearms to the elbows وأيديكم إلى المرافق
[Al-Ma'idah 5:6]
, and He said:
and wash your feet to the ankles وأرجلكم إلى الكعبين
[Al-Ma'idah 5:6]
He defined it, so do not deviate from the Qur'an.
"And guard the limits of your Lord, do not transgress them, *** and likewise do not lean toward falling short."
People regarding limits are divided into two groups: a group that transgresses the limits, and a group that falls short of them. So you do not transgress, and you do not fall short.
