The Shaykh : Know that intercession is of two types: general and specific. The specific type is that which belongs to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) and to no one else. It is of three types: The first type is his intercession for the people of the standing place so that judgment is passed between them. The second is his intercession for the people of Paradise so that it is opened for them and they enter it. The third is his intercession for his uncle Abu Talib so that the punishment is lightened for him, because no one intercedes for a disbeliever and it is accepted except the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family). He interceded for his uncle and the punishment was lightened for him. These three types are specific to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) and do not apply to anyone else. If someone asks, why was Abu Talib specifically granted the acceptance of intercession? Is it because he was the uncle of the Messenger? No, because if that were the reason, Abu Lahab would have deserved intercession for him. But the reason is that Abu Talib stood in defense of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family), supported his call, and testified to its truth, but he was deprived of submission and acceptance. We ask Allah for safety and that He not let us down. He used to say in his famous poem, which Ibn Kathir (may Allah have mercy on him) said deserved to be included in the seven Mu'allaqat that the Quraysh hung in the Ka'bah because they are great poems. In this poem he says:
They have certainly known that our son is not a denier *** with us, nor does he concern himself with the words of falsehood.
And he says: And you have certainly known that the religion of Muhammad *** is the best of the religions of the earth in religion.
If it were not for the blame or fear of insult *** you would have seen me lenient and clear regarding that.
This was testimony to the truth, but he did not submit and accept. Therefore, he was abandoned at his death and his end was sealed with a bad ending. We ask Allah for safety. So, the intercession that was permitted to the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) was not permitted to him because he was his uncle, but because of what he did in defending the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family). This type is specific to the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him), and it is of three types. The first one, Ya Mishaush?
The student: Yes, ...

The Shaykh : Yes, this affliction of drowsiness during remembrance is from Shaytan, and during fighting.
The student: ...

The Shaykh : From Allah (Mighty and Majestic), yes?
The student: ... I see you.

The Shaykh : I see you, but you do not understand what I am saying.
The student : Shaykh

The Shaykh : Yes
The student: ...

The Shaykh : His intercession for the people of the standing place so that judgment is passed between them, and for the people of Paradise so that they enter it, and for his uncle Abu Talib so that the punishment is lightened for him, until he was in shallow fire, with sandals on his feet from which his brain boiled. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) said:
had It not been for me, he would have been in the bottom of the (Hell) Fire. ولولا أنا لكان في الدرك الأسفل من النار
Sahih al-Bukhari 3883
. As for the general intercession of the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) and others, it is intercession for those who have earned the Fire so that they do not enter it, and for those who have entered it so that they are brought out of it. Intercession is also for Allah to raise the ranks of those whose rank has been lowered. There are many who intercede for those who have earned the Fire so that they do not enter it, and for those who have entered it so that they are brought out of it, and they intercede through supplication, as the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
If any Muslim dies and forty men who associate nothing with Allah stand over his prayer (they offer prayer over him), Allah will accept them as intercessors for him. ما من رجل مسلم يموت فيقوم على جنازته أربعون رجلا لا يشركون بالله شيئا إلا شفعهم الله فيه
Sahih Muslim 948
. This is general for the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and for others among the prophets, the truthful ones, the martyrs, and the righteous. But intercession is not established except by two things, except by two conditions. The first condition is the permission of Allah (the Exalted) for it, so if He does not permit it, there is no intercession. Allah the Exalted said:
Who is it that can intercede with Him من ذا الذي يشفع عنده
[Al-Baqarah 2:255]
What?
Except with his permission إلا بإذنه
. The second condition is that Allah (the Exalted) is pleased with the one who intercedes and the one for whom intercession is made. Allah (Blessed and Exalted is He) said:
and they cannot intercede except on behalf of one whom He approves ولا يشفعون إلا لمن ارتضى
[Al-Anbya 21:28]
And this is the pleasure of whom?
The student: Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He)

The Shaykh : No, but the pleasure is of whom?
The student: The one for whom intercession is made and the one who intercedes.
The student: The one for whom intercession is made.

The Shaykh :
and they cannot intercede except on behalf of one whom He approves ولا يشفعون إلا لمن ارتضى
[Al-Anbya 21:28]

The student: The one for whom intercession is made.

The Shaykh : The one for whom intercession is made?
The student: The one for whom intercession is made.

The Shaykh : The one for whom intercession is made. This is the condition of Allah's pleasure with the one for whom intercession is made. As for the one who intercedes, Allah the Exalted said:
And how many angels there are in the heavens whose intercession will not avail at all except [only] after Allah has permitted [it] to whom He wills and approves. وكم من ملك في السماوات لا تغني شفاعتهم شيئا إلا من بعد أن يأذن الله لمن يشاء ويرضى
[An-Najm 53:26]
, meaning Allah (Mighty and Majestic) is pleased. So it is necessary that Allah is pleased with the one who intercedes and with the one for whom intercession is made. Yes.
