Explanation of the Book of the Adhan-09b

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The reciter: Muhammad narrated to us, saying: 'Abdah informed us from Yahya ibn Sa'id al-Ansari from 'Umrah from 'A'ishah, who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to pray at night in his chamber, and the wall of the chamber was short, so the people saw the figure of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). Some people stood up and prayed following his prayer. When morning came, they talked about it. So he stood up the second night, and some people stood with him and prayed following his prayer. They did this for two or three nights. After that, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) sat down and did not come out. When morning came, the people mentioned this to him, and he said:
that he way afraid that the night prayer might become compulsory إني خشيت أن تكتب عليكم صلاة الليل
Sahih al-Bukhari 729

The Shaykh : This is an important issue: if there is a barrier between the imam and the ma'mum, such as a wall, a sutrah, or something else, is it valid for the ma'mum to follow him? This requires a detailed explanation. If they are in the mosque, it is valid because the place is the same. For example, if the imam is in the front and the ma'mum are here, that is valid. If the imam is upstairs and the ma'mum are downstairs, that is also valid. However, if the ma'mum are outside the mosque, the prayer is valid if the rows are connected, as happens during the seasons of pilgrimage in the two mosques, al-Masjid al-Haram and al-Masjid al-Nabawi. If the rows are not connected, the correct view is that following the imam is not valid, because the purpose of the congregation is gathering, bonding, and closeness. If we say that a person, even if he is far from the mosque, can follow an imam in the mosque while the mosque is empty, this does not fulfill the purpose of the congregation. Furthermore, it opens a door that cannot be closed, which is for people to follow the imam of al-Haram via television. In that case, if we tell a person to pray Jumu'ah, he would say, "I will pray in al-Haram behind the imam of al-Haram; it is better than you and has a larger congregation." Yes, this results in some evil. The correct view is the detailed explanation: if the imam and the ma'mum are in the mosque, there is no harm in praying behind him even if there is a barrier between them. But if he is outside the mosque, if it is for an excuse, such as the mosque being full, there is no harm in praying, but on the condition that he hears the takbir, as Abu Mujlaz said, and this is clear. Otherwise, it is not valid, because the purpose of the congregation is gathering. For this reason, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
When you hear the Iqama, proceed to offer the prayer إذا سمعتم الإقامة فامشوا إلى الصلاة
Sahih al-Bukhari 636
Walk, even if you have to crawl. If it were permissible for a person to pray with his companion in the place where he is, the Messenger would not have encouraged attendance in this way. Yes.
