The Shaykh : In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful:
These are the remaining hadiths that al-Nawawi (may Allah have mercy on him) transmitted in his book *Riyad al-Salihin* in the chapter on the virtue of night prayer:
And they indicate the following matters:
The first matter: If a person misses the night prayer, he makes it up during the day, but he does not perform the witr, because the witr concludes the night prayer, and it has ended, as indicated by the hadith of Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her):Al-Mustadrak lil-Hakim 25:751 meaning like sleep : because he (peace and blessings be upon him) was consistent in most of his times with eleven rak'ahs, so he would make up what is more complete and more numerous, making up twelve rak'ahs. Accordingly, if it is a person's habit to perform witr with three, and he did not get up, he makes up four during the day, and does not make up three. And if it is his habit to perform witr with five, he makes up six, and so on. But when does he make it up? He makes it up between the rising of the sun and its elevation to the zenith, as indicated by the hadith of 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) regarding the one who misses his portion or his recitation at night, or part of it: that he makes it up during the day in the duha time, so he makes up that in the duha. If he forgets and does not remember it until after Zuhr, he makes it up after Zuhr, due to the generality of the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family): .
And what these hadiths indicate is that if a person is overcome by sleep and drowsiness comes to him while he is praying, he should not pray, because he may go to seek forgiveness for himself and end up cursing himself because he is drowsy.
Also, the Qur'an may become tangled on his tongue, and he may speak a word from the Qur'an in a way that is not its proper form, thereby distorting the Qur'an. So if it is your habit to pray at night and sleep comes to you, do not strain yourself; sleep until the drowsiness passes from you, then resume standing in prayer. If Fajr breaks, then as mentioned before: you make up the witr in the duha, but in an even number.
And what these hadiths indicate is that it is recommended for a person, if he has a family and gets up at night, to wake his family, but according to the energy of the family. For this reason, the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) would pray at night, and if only the witr remained, he would wake Aisha so she would perform the witr. Meaning: it is not necessary to wake your family with you, because your family may not be like you in physical or mental energy, so do not wake them with you; it is not necessary unless you see that they are willing. But do not forget them at the end of the night; they get up, even if only for the witr, as the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) used to do. We ask Allah to make us and you among those who stand in prayer at night, fast during the day, and worship their Lord with true worship.
The author (may Allah have mercy on him) transmitted, in the context of the hadiths in the chapter on the virtue of night prayer: “Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) said:
The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), when he missed the prayer due to pain or something else, would pray twelve rak'ahs during the day.
And from 'Umar ibn al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him), he said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Should anyone fall asleep and fail to recite his portion of the Qur'an, or a part of it, if he recites it between the dawn prayer and the noon prayer, it will be recorded for him as though he had recited it during the night.
And from Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him), he said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
May Allah show mercy to a man who gets up during the night and performs Salat, awakens his wife to pray and if she refuses, he sprinkles water on her face (to make her get up). May Allah show mercy to a woman who gets up during the night and performs Salat, awakens her husband for the same purpose; and if he refuses, she sprinkles water on his face.
And from him, and from Abu Sa'id (may Allah be pleased with them both), they said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
If a man awakens his wife at night, and then both pray or both offer two rak'ahs together, the (name of the )man will be recorded among those who mention the name of Allah, and the (name of the) woman will be recorded among those who mention the name of Allah.
And from Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her), that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
When one of you dozes in prayer he should sleep till his sleep is gone, for when one of you prays while he is dozing, perhaps he might curse himself if he begs pardon of Allah.
And from Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him), he said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
When one of you gets up by night (to pray), and falters in reciting the Qur'an (due to sleep), and he does not understand what he utters, he should sleep.
