Benefits of the Hadith: (… Aisha narrated that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) prayed in the mosque one night, and people prayed with his prayer, then he prayed …).

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : As for the hadith of Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her), it contains evidence of the Prophet’s (peace and blessings be upon him) compassion for the Ummah and that it is hard for him when things are difficult for them, as Allah described him with this in His saying:
Grievous to him is what you suffer; [he is] concerned over you and to the believers is kind and merciful. عَزيزٌ عَلَيهِ ما عَنِتُّم حَريصٌ عَلَيكُم بِالمُؤمِنينَ رَءوفٌ رَحيمٌ
[At-Tawbah 9:128]
.
It also indicates that a person may be obligated to perform an act of worship if he commits to it, just as if he commits to it by vow, he must fulfill it. If the Companions had committed to it and come every night, it might have become obligatory for them because they committed to it. But is this safe in the present time, or is it not safe?
The student: It is safe.

The Shaykh : It is safe; it cannot become obligatory. And therefore, after the death of the Messenger (may the prayer and peace of Allah be upon him), and after a period of the Caliphate had passed—after the Caliphate of Abu Bakr and the beginning of the Caliphate of 'Umar—the people agreed on an Imam. Yes.
