Explanation of the Book of Friday Prayer and the Two Festivals-03b

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The reciter: Muhammad ibn Muqatil narrated to us, Abdullah narrated to us, Abu Bakr ibn Uthman ibn Sahl ibn Hunaif narrated to us from Abu Umamah ibn Sahl ibn Hunaif, who said:
I heard Mu'awiyah ibn Abi Sufyan, while he was sitting on the pulpit, as the mu'adhdhin called out: "Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar." Mu'awiyah said: "Allahu Akbar, Allahu Akbar." The mu'adhdhin said: "I bear witness that there is no god but Allah," and Mu'awiyah said: "And I." The mu'adhdhin said: "I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah," and Mu'awiyah said: "And I." When the call to prayer was finished, he said: "O people, I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) on this platform, when the mu'adhdhin called to prayer, saying: 'What you heard from me of my speech.'"
.

The Shaykh : And there is no difficulty in this hadith regarding his saying: "And I," because what is known may be omitted. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said in responding to the mu'adhdhin: "And I," so he omitted what was known. This does not contradict his saying (peace and blessings be upon him):
repeat what the Mu'adhdhin pronounces فقولوا مثل ما يقول المؤذن
Sahih Muslim 383
because the omitted known matter is like what is present. And Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) says:
Qutba b. Malik said that the Prophet used to say, "O God, I seek refuge in Thee from objectionable characteristics, deeds and passions." Tirmidhi transmitted it. إن النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم يقول ما سمعتم من مقالتي
Mishkat al-Masabih 2471
So it cannot be said that this was an exercise of independent legal reasoning by Mu'awiyah, and that Mu'awiyah was the one who shortened the sentence and limited himself to saying "And I," because Mu'awiyah is a trustworthy, noble Companion, a scribe of revelation in the presence of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). Yes.

The questioner : Did the sunnah established by Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) remain followed during the era of the caliphs after him?

The Shaykh : I do not know, but it appears that it remained.

The questioner : If someone were to say: If the intention of the third adhan is to make the people hear... then why does the mu'adhdhin not go to the market and call the adhan...

The Shaykh : ...the market for the sake of the women? For the sake of the word "women"?
No, no, because now loudspeakers replace going to the market. Now the loudspeaker is heard by the one in the middle of the market.

The questioner : ...Do we say this is prescribed, or do we close the door on the idea that Uthman and... (may Allah be pleased with him), whose sins are forgiven, by his action... and this action is considered a strong proof from Uthman...

The Shaykh : If someone says this, we say: Yes, and upon the eyes and heads. But be one of the Rightly Guided Caliphs. Do you understand? If someone says: We will call the 'Asr adhan half an hour before its time because people are sleeping and some are eating, and I want to wake them up—do we do that? I am asking you: do we do it or not? Say: We do not do it. This means that whoever is like Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) among the Rightly Guided Caliphs, may you have discernment and intellect. It does not mean that everyone comes and exercises independent legal reasoning, putting in an adhan, putting in an iqamah, meaning the religion becomes fragmented, with each person legislating as he pleases.
The cause: We say "May Allah heal you" or "May Allah restore your health." We say: The cause is, if you are one of the Rightly Guided Caliphs, then upon the eyes and heads. Otherwise, we ask Allah for your immediate healing. Do you understand? The time is up. No, one minute after the two hours.
