Listen to the words of the Messenger:
When a person dies, his deeds are cut off إذا مات الإنسان انقطع عمله
Jami` at-Tirmidhi 1376Sahih (Darussalam)
The Messenger is speaking: Does the deceased have any deeds after his death? He said:
When a man dies, his deeds come to an end, except for three: A continuous charity, knowledge by which people derive benefit إذا مات الإنسان انقطع عمله، إلا من ثلاث : صدقة جارية، أو علم ينتفع به
Riyad as-Salihin 949
. And this is from his actions:
Ongoing charity صدقة جارية
meaning a man endowed a property for the poor; this is a continuous charity. Or he dug a well from which people drink; this is a continuous charity. Or he built a mosque in which people pray and worship; this is a continuous charity.
Knowledge that is benefited from علم ينتفع به
Who taught the deceased, or rather his children? The deceased. This is an action of the deceased: knowledge from which benefit is derived.
Which is better: knowledge from which benefit is derived, or continuous charity?
