Exegesis of Surat al-Humazah: "Woe to every slanderer and backbiter"

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : As for what concerns these two surahs, Allah (Mighty and Majestic) says:
Woe to every scorner and mocker ويل لكل همزة لمزة
[Al-Humazah 104:1]
"Woe" is a word of warning, a word of threat. This is why people use it to threaten others now; they threaten a child with it, saying to him, "Woe to you if you do such and such." So "Woe" is a word of what? Warning and threat.
to every scorner and mocker لكل همزة لمزة
[Al-Humazah 104:1]
It means that people are criticized for whispering sometimes and for backbiting sometimes. Backbiting is mentioning the faults of others, as Allah the Exalted said:
And do not insult one another and do not call each other by [offensive] nicknames ولا تلمزوا أنفسكم ولا تنابزوا بالألقاب
[Al-Hujurat 49:11]
