The questioner : He says: I am a student of knowledge, and in my country they celebrate the Prophet’s (peace and blessings be upon him) birthday as a festival like 'Id al-Fitr and 'Id al-Adha. Is it permissible for me to intentionally fast on this day so that my relatives and people know that it is not a festival?
The Shaykh : Countering an innovation with an innovation is of no benefit. Fasting on the day of the birthday celebration is an innovation, but better than this is to explain to them that it is an innovation. If he fears that if he stands before them as a preacher they will swallow him up, he should take them one by one and explain to them. The community is made up of individuals. If he explains to this individual that this is an innovation, and that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) did not do it, nor did the Companions, nor the Tabi'un, but it was introduced in the fourth century of the Hijri calendar, and he explains it to him and this person is convinced, he will convince others until Allah puts an end to this innovation. Yes.
