The meaning of the saying of Allah the Exalted: "And He found you lost, so He guided you."
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : For this reason, He said: [Ad-Duhaa 93:7] The past tense verb is connected to the present tense verb because the meaning is that He found you an orphan and took you in, and He found you lost and guided you. Allah found His Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) lost, and the "lostness" here is not the lostness of going astray, but rather the lostness of not having knowledge; that is, He found you not knowing, so He gave you knowledge. This is the truth. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was unlettered; he did not read or write. As Allah the Exalted said: [Al-'Ankabut 29:48] What? [Al-'Ankabut 29:48] And when Jibril said to him when the revelation first descended upon him, when Jibril said to him "Read," he said: meaning, I am not one of those who read, because he (peace and blessings be upon him), like the other Arabs, was among the unlettered. [Al-Jumu'ah 62:2] So the "lostness" here means the lack of knowledge, not the going astray that we say about a disbeliever, "This one is lost." No, by Allah, the meaning is that he did not know anything before the revelation was sent down to him. Does not Allah the Exalted say to the Messenger: [An-Nisa 4:113] Did not Allah say to him: [Ash-Shuraa 42:52]. But Allah guided the Messenger by what He sent down to him of revelation. For this reason, "He found you lost, so He guided you." This is clear: Allah the Exalted guided him in knowledge and in action.
