Explaining the wisdom behind Allah the Exalted reprimanding His noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him).

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : We mentioned in the course of our discussion that when Allah, Glorified and Exalted is He, reprimands His Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family), He does so with a gentle reprimand, because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) holds a very high rank with his Lord, above the ranks of all human beings. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
I shall be pre-eminent among the descendants of Adam
Sunan Abi Dawud 4673Sahih (Al-Albani)
. Now, let us take another example, different from the one we are currently discussing. Allah, Mighty and Majestic, said to His Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):
May Allah pardon you, [O Muhammad]; why did you give them permission [to remain behind]? [You should not have] until it was evident to you who were truthful and you knew [who were] the liars.
[At-Tawbah 9:43]
. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) dealt with people according to what was apparent in their conditions, and he entrusted their inner secrets to whom? To Allah, Mighty and Majestic. So he pardoned a group of hypocrites, and he did not know, or perhaps they were not hypocrites, but they excused themselves with something that was not a valid excuse. So Allah said to him:
May Allah pardon you, [O Muhammad]; why did you give
[At-Tawbah 9:43]
Glory be to Allah! He placed the pardon before what? Before the reprimand. And this is the ultimate expression of Allah’s, Mighty and Majestic, exalting of His Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him).
A third example: Allah the Exalted said to His Prophet:
(2) Because there came to him the blind man, [interrupting]. (3) But what would make you perceive, [O Muhammad], that perhaps he might be purified (4) Or be reminded and the remembrance would benefit him? (5) As for he who thinks himself without need, (6) To him you give attention. (7) And not upon you [is any blame] if he will not be purified. (8) But as for he who came to you striving [for knowledge] (9) While he fears [Allah], (10) From him you are distracted. (11) No! Indeed, these verses are a reminder;
['Abasa 80:2-11]
. The explanation of this, meaning the meaning of this, is that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had with him Abdullah ibn Umm Maktum, who was blind. He came to him, meaning he came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and there were with him some of the nobles of Quraysh. But the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) turned toward these nobles, hoping that this would have an effect on their faith. And Abdullah ibn Umm Maktum was a man from his intimate companions. So Allah said to him:
He frowned and turned away
Who frowned? And He did not say "You frowned and turned away." He said:
He frowned عبس
. It is known that the third-person pronoun, even though its referent is known, is not like the second-person pronoun. The second-person pronoun is stronger in blame. He said:
He frowned and turned away, when there came to him the blind man.
Then He said:
But what would make you perceive, [O Muhammad], that perhaps he might be purified
['Abasa 80:3]
. So He used the second-person pronoun here, unlike the first instance, because the first instance contained a reprimand, so He used the third-person pronoun instead of the second-person pronoun—go on—because it is milder. In any case, our Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) holds a great rank with Allah, Blessed and Exalted is He. And if Moses was honored in the sight of Allah, and Jesus was honored in the sight of Allah, then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) is more honored than both of them; this is the reality.
Those messengers - some of them We caused to exceed others.
[Al-Baqarah 2:253]
And We have made some of the prophets exceed others
[Al-Isra 17:55]
. So Allah mentioned the messengers and mentioned the prophets that some of them are preferred over others. And this is a matter in which there is no doubt. But does the fact that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) is honored in the sight of Allah imply that we should seek nearness to Allah through the honor of the Messenger? No, because the honor of the Messenger is a rank for the Messenger; we have no benefit in it. The benefit is specific to the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him). Our benefit is in what? In believing in the Messenger, in loving the Messenger, in following the Messenger. As for the honor of the Messenger, it is a rank for the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him). So we do not say, "I ask you by the honor of your Prophet, so and so"; that is forbidden. Say, "I ask you by my faith in your Prophet, I ask you by my love for your Prophet," because this benefits you. Seeking nearness to Allah through something that has no benefit is vain and has no benefit. Is the time up? Good.
