The Meaning of Allah the Exalted’s Saying: “And if you are in a state of major ritual impurity, then purify yourselves,” and the Definition of Janabah
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : Then Allah the Mighty and Majestic said: [Al-Ma'idah 5:6] Allah the Exalted did not specify how he is to purify himself. “Purify” here means “purify oneself,” but the taa was assimilated into the taa. Allah did not mention how one purifies oneself, so I am asking you now: if a man is in a state of major ritual impurity and goes to a pool, intends to purify himself, and submerges himself in it, then comes out intending to purify himself from the major ritual impurity, is that sufficient for him or not? It is sufficient, but he must rinse his mouth and sniff water into his nose. Why is it not sufficient [without that]? Because Allah said: [Al-Ma'idah 5:6] Now, does he need to perform ablution? He does not need to, because Allah did not mention anything regarding major ritual impurity except purification, i.e., purifying oneself. However, there is no doubt that performing ablution before the full ritual bath is better, because the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) Now, [Al-Ma'idah 5:6] What causes a state of major ritual impurity? A state of major ritual impurity is caused by one of two things: either sexual intercourse, even if no emission occurs. This is a matter, my brothers, that is hidden from many newlyweds. Many people think that if a man has intercourse with his wife and does not emit, he does not have to perform the full ritual bath.
The student: Repeat, repeat, O Shaykh.
The Shaykh : I say: Some people think that if a man has intercourse with his wife and does not emit, he does not have to perform the full ritual bath. This is why the question about this matter is frequent. We say: No, he must perform the full ritual bath, based on the hadith of Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:Sahih al-Bukhari 291 And in a wording in Muslim: It is clear, everyone, that this obligates the full ritual bath. Sexual intercourse alone obligates the full ritual bath, even if there is no emission.
The second is emission, whether it occurs through wet dreams, or through touching, or through kissing, or through thinking, or through any cause. If a man emits with pleasure, he must perform the full ritual bath in all cases.
So, does a state of major ritual impurity include three things or four? Does a state of major ritual impurity include three things or four? Two. Yes, that is right.
Sexual intercourse, even if no emission occurs, and emission, even if no sexual intercourse occurs. That is right. If both sexual intercourse and emission occur, it is even more so.
A state of major ritual impurity obligates the full ritual bath and suffices in place of ablution, but ablution before the full ritual bath is better due to the action of the Messenger of Allah (may the prayers and peace of Allah be upon him).
And if you are in a state of janabah, then purify yourselves

وإن كنتم جنبا فاطهرواWhen he performed the full ritual bath, he would perform ablution as he does for prayer, then pour water over his head three times until he saturated it, then wash the rest of his body.
