The Friday bath is like the bath for major ritual impurity, so one begins with the ablution. ?

The questioner : The Friday bath is like the bath for major ritual impurity, so does one perform the ablution before the bath?

The Shaykh : It is the recommended practice (sunnah) to perform the ablution; performing the ablution before the bath for major ritual impurity is better, and likewise for the Friday bath. If one does not perform the ablution, there is nothing wrong with it, based on the saying of Allah the Exalted:
And if you are in a state of janabah, then purify yourselves وإن كنتم جنباً فاطّهّروا
[Al-Ma'idah 5:6]
. However, some people raised an objection to us, saying that the phrase
So purify yourselves فاطهروا
is general, and the Sunnah specified it, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to perform the ablution when he took a bath. The answer to this objection is to say that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to the man who attended the prayer but did not pray:
What prevented you? He said: I was in a state of major ritual impurity and there was no water. He said: Use the clean earth, for it is sufficient for you. Then water became available, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Take this — meaning the remaining water after the people had drawn water and drunk — he said: Take this and pour it over yourself.
and he did not say "perform the ablution." This indicates that the verse is to be taken in its general sense, and that if a person pours water over his entire body, it suffices in place of the ablution.
