The Meaning of Allah's Saying: "But He intends to purify you and to complete His favor upon you, so that you may be grateful," and the Definition of Gratitude and Its Pillars.

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : We return to the noble verse to complete it. Allah the Exalted said:
but He intends to purify you and complete His favor upon you ولكن يريد ليطهركم وليتم نعمته عليكم
[Al-Ma'idah 5:6]
Is this purification physical? Or is it physical and spiritual? It is both physical and spiritual. As for its being physical, that is evident, especially the purification of water. As for its being spiritual, the ablution purifies a person from sins. When he washes his face, the sins of his face go out with the last drop of water, and the same is said for the rest of the limbs. Therefore, it is prescribed for a person, when he finishes his ablution, to say:
Ashhadu an la ilaha ill-Allah was ashhadu anna Muhammadan 'abduhu wa rasuluh (I bear witness that there is none worthy of worship except Allah, and I bear witness that Muhammad is his slave and Messenger) أشهد أن لا إله إلا الله وأشهد أن محمدا عبده ورسوله
Sunan an-Nasa'i 148Sahih (Darussalam)
to purify his heart from shirk (associating partners with Allah), and this is spiritual purification.
O Allah! Make me among the repentant, and make me among those who purify themselves. اللهم اجعلني من التوابين واجعلني من المتطهرين
Jami` at-Tirmidhi 55Da'if (Darussalam)
The Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Whoever performs the ablution thoroughly and then says that, the eight gates of Paradise will be opened for him, and he will enter from whichever he wishes من أسبغ الوضوء ثم قال ذلك فتحت له أبواب الجنة الثمانية يدخل من أيتها شاء
Then he said:
so that you may be grateful لعلكم تشكرون
"Perhaps" — oh brother, say that you are not the one asking, because it appears he has drifted away from us. What is the question? You are not present, it appears. Rest. Now, who understands the question about "perhaps"?
The student: ... .

The Shaykh : Now, rest. Here, "perhaps" indicates the cause. "Perhaps" here is for the cause, not for hope, because Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) is not hoped for in anything, as He is capable of everything. But it is for the cause, meaning so that you may thank Allah for this blessing and this facilitation. The scholars said: "It is fulfilling the obedience of the Bestower, with acknowledgment in the heart, confession with the tongue, and obedience with the limbs." How many are there from one?
Acknowledgment in the heart, confession with the tongue, and action with the limbs. How many are these? Three. This means that gratitude is not by the tongue alone, saying "thank you to Allah," but it is by the tongue, the limbs, and the heart. The heart is that you acknowledge that the blessing is from Allah alone, so He is the Bestower (Mighty and Majestic).
And whatever you have of favor - it is from Allah وما بكم من نعمة فمن الله
[An-Nahl 16:53]
As for the tongue, it is that you praise Allah (Mighty and Majestic) with it, saying, "Praise be to Allah who provided for me, kept me healthy, fed me, and clothed me," and the like. And you speak of it among people to remind them of the blessing of Allah, not to boast with it over the servants of Allah. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
I am the leader of the sons of Adam, and it is no boast أنا سيد ولد آدم ولا فخر
Sunan Ibn Majah 4308Sahih (Darussalam)
meaning, I do not say that in boasting, but in speaking of the blessing of Allah.
The third is: fulfilling the obedience of Allah by complying with His commands and avoiding His prohibitions. As for saying, "I thank Allah for this blessing," while you are openly defying Allah in disobedience, where is the gratitude? And the poet said, clarifying the places of gratitude or the things related to gratitude:
"I have benefited you with three things from me: *** My hand, my tongue, and the hidden conscience."
"I have benefited you with three things from me: *** My hand, my tongue, and the hidden conscience."
Did he recite it for us?
The student: ... .

The Shaykh : It is long. It is one verse. Now.
The student: ... .

The Shaykh : Three, three is the object of "benefited."
The student: ... .

The Shaykh : Well done. This means that the object of gratitude is the hand, the tongue, and the heart, which is the hidden conscience.
Now, what is the gratitude for the blessing if Allah gave you knowledge? That you acknowledge that it is from Allah, and that if Allah had not taught you, you would not have known, and that you teach people, and so on.
If Allah wills, with questions, and questions related to the topic of the lesson are prioritized over others.
Second: No question is accepted except through writing. Yes, it is not accepted.
