The Shaykh : These books.
And let it be known that gratitude is connected to the tongue, the limbs, and the heart. Gratitude is connected to the tongue, the limbs, and the heart, and it does not occur except in response to a blessing. Praise is specific to the tongue, and it occurs in response to a blessing and other things. Yes, praise is with the tongue and the heart, and it occurs in response to a blessing and other things. So between each of them, there is a general and a specific aspect from one angle. Gratitude is connected to the heart such that a person believes that this blessing is pure grace from Allah Mighty and Majestic, and that he has no earning in it, and that Allah the Exalted is the one who deserves gratitude for it. As for the tongue, Allah described it by saying:
But as for the favor of your Lord, report [it]. وأما بنعمة ربك فحدث
[Ad-Duhaa 93:11]
. As for the limbs, it is that you fulfill the obedience of Allah Mighty and Majestic. Allah the Exalted said:
O messengers, eat from the good foods and work righteousness يا أيها الرسل كلوا من الطيبات واعملوا صالحا
[Al-Mu'minun 23:51]
, and He said:
O you who have believed, eat from the good things which We have provided for you and be grateful to Allah يا أيها الذين آمنوا كلوا من طيبات ما رزقناكم واشكروا لله
[Al-Baqarah 2:172]
. So He made gratitude in response to what? Righteous deeds. This indicates that righteous deeds are gratitude. For this reason, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
And indeed Allah ordered the believers with what He ordered the Messengers إن الله أمر المؤمنين بما أمر به المرسلين
Jami` at-Tirmidhi 2989Sahih (Darussalam)
. These are three connections. For this reason, the poet said:
"The blessings have benefited me with three things: my hand, my tongue, and the hidden conscience"
"The blessings have benefited me with three things: my hand, my tongue, and the hidden conscience"
The heart, and the meaning is: These three things have benefited you in that you possess me in my feelings, my speech, and my actions.
Praise is with the tongue and the heart, but it occurs in response to a blessing and in response to the perfection of the one being praised. So we praise Allah Mighty and Majestic for the perfection of His blessings upon us and for the perfection of His attributes, Glorified and Exalted is He, for which He deserves praise. So it became narrower than gratitude in terms of what? Its object, and broader than gratitude in terms of its cause. The cause of gratitude is the blessing, and the cause of praise is the blessing and the perfection of the one being praised.
