Warning Against Being Carried Away by Emotion
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : Emotion can sometimes be a storm. Many people rush after emotion, rushing after it without thinking, estimating, or looking into matters. And this, I mean, rushing after emotion, will turn that emotion into a storm, because if emotion has no brakes from the Shari'ah and the intellect, it leads its owner to destruction; it leads its owner to destruction, without a doubt. I am not saying speak without emotion, because speaking without emotion may be dead. But I am not saying speak with a burning emotion that burns what is in front of it. Speak with a balanced emotion. Balanced by what? By the Shari'ah and the intellect.
If we followed after emotions, we would perish and cause others to perish. And how many are there in this time who proceed by emotions without looking at the results and without investigating the matter? This is a great danger to their religion and their worldly affairs.
I give you a simple example of the difference between emotion and reason.
A man entered the mosque of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) while the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was present and the Companions were present. He moved to a corner of the mosque and began to urinate, urinating in the mosque, because he was an ignorant Bedouin. Urinating in the mosque is forbidden. So the Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) shouted at him, they rebuked him, they rebuked him with severe prohibition. Why? Because he did an abominable act. What drove them to do that? Religious emotion, jealousy for the mosque of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) that a Bedouin man would urinate in it. They rebuked him. But the one to whom Allah granted wisdom said: "Leave him, leave him, do not stop him", do not cut off his urination. So they left him. If this Bedouin had followed the emotion of the Companions who rebuked him, one of two things would have happened: either he would stand with his private parts exposed so that the urine would not hit his garment, or he would cover himself and the urine would hit his garment. This is from one aspect. From another aspect, if he stood with his private parts exposed, the urine would not stop at once; it would drip in another part of the mosque, making the mosque more impure than before. For this reason, the wisdom of the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) was above their emotion. He said, leave him, so they left him. When he finished urinating, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered that water be poured on the urine. If water is poured on the urine, the harm is removed. Or not? It is removed by what? By purification. The place was purified. Then he called the Bedouin and said to him: or as the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said.
In *Musnad al-Imam Ahmad*, it is stated that the Bedouin said:Sahih Ibn Khuzaymah 2:524. Why? Because Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) treated him with wisdom and gentleness. As for the others who stood up and shouted at him, it was with a stormy emotion. So I say, and I direct this statement to you and to whoever my statement reaches: it is obligatory that emotion not carry us to an action whose result is bad and whose emotion is a storm. We must reflect. For this reason, it saddens me greatly to hear, to hear in the news, of Islamic parties that were carried away by emotion in this great disaster, even though its matter is easy, its matter is very easy. To lift the hand from the lands, what? The oppressed lands. If the hand is lifted from the oppressed lands, everything ends. This is what is right, and it is what is heard, and it is what is offered even now.
If we followed after emotions, we would perish and cause others to perish. And how many are there in this time who proceed by emotions without looking at the results and without investigating the matter? This is a great danger to their religion and their worldly affairs.

Indeed, these mosques are not suitable for any harm or filth; they are only for prayer, saying Allahu Akbar, and reciting the Qur'an.
إن هذه المساجد لا يصلح فيها شيء من الأذى والقذر إنما هي للصلاة والتكبير وقراءة القرآنIn *Musnad al-Imam Ahmad*, it is stated that the Bedouin said:
