Q: A woman from Iraq says: I perform the religious obligations of prayer, fasting, and reading the Qur'an with complete sincerity, yet I listen to romantic songs that do not mention intoxicants or similar forbidden things. Is this permissible? Please advise us, may Allah reward you.
A: We advise you not to listen to songs at all; because they are evil, and because they lead to great corruption in the hearts. We advise you to listen to the Qur'an radio, for it contains much good, and to listen to the "Light on the Path" program, and to listen to beneficial and useful hadiths. As for listening to songs, leave them and beware of them; because their evil is great. And Allah the Exalted said:[Luqman 31:6] the verse [Luqman: 6].
Most of the scholars of knowledge said: "La-hw al-hadith (frivolous talk) is singing." And 'Abdullah ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Singing causes hypocrisy to grow in the heart just as water causes grass to grow." And 'Abdullah ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) is one of the Companions of the Messenger (may Allah be pleased with them all) and one of their scholars. And it is authentic from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that he said: So he informed that in the last of time there will be people who consider musical instruments lawful, and they are the entertainments and songs.
So we ask Allah to protect us and you and all Muslims from their evil, and to keep everyone firm upon guidance. Indeed, He is Hearing and Near.
