The questioner : May Allah preserve you, O Shaykh. She states that she is a teacher who loves to do good deeds and help those in need. She says: When I want to give charity from my money to my needy relatives and female friends, my mother opposes these actions on the grounds that I am wasting my money on what is not beneficial and that I need to save this money for what will benefit me later. Does my mother have the right to interfere in my salary? And is it permissible for me to give charity and give gifts without informing her of it? Or what should I do, O honorable Shaykh? May Allah reward you.
The Shaykh : The mother should encourage her children, both male and female, to give charity if it does not harm them, because charity is good and helping with it is good. Allah Blessed and Exalted is He said:[Al-Ma'idah 5:2] And if the mother gets angry when her daughter gives charity with some of her money or gives gifts to her friends, there is no blame on the daughter to give charity and give gifts secretly, without the mother knowing, because the money is hers and she has the right to dispose of it as she wishes within the limits of what Allah Mighty and Majestic has revealed. But it is not permissible for a person to give charity with more than one-third of his wealth, because when Abu Lubabah wanted to give charity with his wealth in gratitude to Allah the Exalted for his repentance, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him: Sunan an-Nasa'i 3823Sahih (Darussalam) and he ordered him not to give charity with all his wealth. Yes.
