In the Hanbali school, if a person performs sa'y (walking between al-Safa and al-Marwah) naked, his sa'y is valid. Does this not contradict his saying (peace and blessings be upon him):

The questioner : O Shaykh, may Allah reward you. The Hanbali school explicitly states that if one performs sa'y (walking between al-Safa and al-Marwah) naked,

The Shaykh : What?

The questioner : that if one performs sa'y (walking between al-Safa and al-Marwah) naked, his sa'y is valid. Can we not include this action in the hadith of the Messenger of Allah
He who did any act for which there is no sanction from our behalf, that is to be rejected. من عمل عملا ليس عليه أمرنا فهو رد
Sahih Muslim 1718b

The Shaykh : Yes, but sa'y (walking between al-Safa and al-Marwah) has no bearing on this.

The questioner : Of the actions.

The Shaykh : It was not stipulated. If it had been stipulated, covering the 'awrah (part of the body that must be covered) would have been required. Yes, if he performed tawaf (circumambulation of the Ka'bah) naked, it would not be valid.

The questioner : It is not reported from the Messenger that he performed tawaf (circumambulation of the Ka'bah) naked.

The Shaykh : In any case, it has no bearing on sa'y (walking between al-Safa and al-Marwah). This is forbidden for him, even if we assume that there is not a single person in the sa'y area and it is in darkness; this is not permissible.

The questioner : Okay, now... he performed sa'y (walking between al-Safa and al-Marwah) naked in front of people; is his sa'y valid?

The Shaykh : This is the best thing: he should be bound and taken to Shiharah. Do you know Shiharah? Yes, Shiharah is the prison for the insane.

The questioner : Oh Shaykh

The Shaykh : There is no question, there is no question, man.
