Exegesis of the saying of Allah the Exalted: “That is the Book, there is no doubt in it,” and the difference between doubt and uncertainty.

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
This is the Book about which there is no doubt ذلك الكتاب لا ريب فيه
[Al-Baqarah 2:2]
That is the Bookذلك الكتاب
It is permissible for us to make
the Bookالكتاب
the predicate of
thatذلك
, and it is permissible to make it an attribute or a clarifying apposition. If we make it the predicate of “that,” then His saying:
about which there is no doubtلا ريب فيه
[Al-Baqarah 2:2]
becomes a new sentence. If we make it a clarifying apposition, then
about which there is no doubtلا ريب فيه
[Al-Baqarah 2:2]
becomes the predicate of the demonstrative noun. The book referred to is the Qur'an, and it is called a book because it is written in the Preserved Tablet, written in the scrolls in the hands of the angels
(11) No! Indeed, these verses are a reminder; (12) So whoever wills may remember it. (13) [It is recorded] in honored sheets, (14) Exalted and purified, (15) [Carried] by the hands of messenger-angels, (16) Noble and dutiful. كلا إنها تذكرة فمن شاء ذكره في صحف مكرمة مرفوعة مطهرة بأيدي سفرة كرام بررة
['Abasa 80:11-16]
, and written in the mushafs that are in our hands.
about which there is no doubt لا ريب فيه
[Al-Baqarah 2:2]
“There is no doubt in it.” What is the meaning of doubt? It is uncertainty. This is how most scholars have interpreted it, that doubt is uncertainty. However, the Shaykh al-Islam (may Allah have mercy on him) has a view regarding such synonymous words. He says: There is no word in the Arabic language that is a complete synonym for another word in every respect. There must be a difference between them. So, doubt here is not identical to uncertainty in every respect, because doubt means uncertainty accompanied by anxiety and suspicion. Therefore, it is more specific than uncertainty. However, there is no harm in interpreting the word with something close to it, especially if the person being addressed cannot visualize the difference. And His saying:
about which there is no doubtلا ريب فيه
[Al-Baqarah 2:2]
“There is no doubt” is a negation of the genus, which includes the least degree of doubt, meaning there is not even the slightest doubt in it.
