Let us now look at whom this parable applies to. This parable applies to a group of hypocrites who did not believe at all; they did not believe in the first place. Their original state was hypocrisy, and they are the Jewish hypocrites. This is because among the hypocrites were Arabs from the Khazraj and the Aws, and there were Jews from the Children of Israel. The Jews never tasted the taste of Islam at all. Why? Because they were disbelievers from the start, but they displayed Islam out of fear of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) after Allah had honored him at Badr. These people are not on the right guidance like the first group. The first group kindled a fire and had some light from that fire, and then, may Allah protect us, they fell back into disbelief. But these people were from the start...
