The benefits of the verse: “But you will not do it, nor will you ever be able to do it, so fear the Fire whose fuel is men and stones, prepared for the disbelievers,” and the discussion of al-sarfah (diversion).

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Among the benefits of this noble verse is that no one can oppose the speech of Allah, as He said:
and you will not do itولن تفعلوا
In this phrase, there are two arguments: an argument for the view of those who hold to al-sarfah (diversion), meaning that by the nature of humans, they are capable of producing something like the Qur'an, but they were diverted from doing so. On this view, the challenge is possible, but an obstacle was found, namely that Allah diverted them from opposing it such that they did not desire to do it. The second argument, which is the second view, is that they will not do it by the nature of their constitution, not that they were diverted while having the ability to oppose the Qur'an. This is the correct view, because the first view, or the first possibility, does not indicate that the Qur'an is a miracle in itself, since it implies that they could have produced something like it, but Allah diverted them. They did not pay attention to this or think about it. However, we say that this is incorrect; rather, the truth is that a human being, by himself, is unable to produce something like the Qur'an, because the Qur'an is the speech of Allah, and speech is an attribute of the Speaker. Just as humans cannot resemble Allah the Exalted in His attributes, they can never resemble Allah in His speech; it is impossible. For this reason, those who claimed prophethood and brought forth what they called the Qur'an were a mockery to the people and a source of ridicule, as is mentioned regarding Musaylimah the Liar and others. Therefore, the correct understanding of His saying:
you will not do itلن تفعلوا
is not that “you will be diverted from it and will not do it,” but rather that you are incapable by the nature of human beings. The basis for what we said is that speech is an attribute of the Speaker, and the Qur'an is the speech of Allah Mighty and Majestic. Just as humans do not resemble Allah in His attributes of knowledge, power, hearing, sight, and others, so it is not possible for them to resemble Allah the Exalted in speech. Among the benefits of this noble verse is that whoever intends to oppose the Qur'an, his destination is the Fire, as He said:
then fear the Fire, فاتقوا النار التي
[Al-Baqarah 2:24]
. Among the benefits of this noble verse is also that people are the fuel for the Fire, just as fire is fueled by wood. Thus, at the same time, it burns them, and it is also fueled by them. The punishment encompasses them from two aspects: the first is that they are the material that fuels it, and the second is that they are burned by it. Among the benefits of this noble verse is the humiliation of these disbelievers by degrading their gods and casting them into the Fire, according to one of the two possibilities in His saying:
stonesالحجارة
It is known that a person is jealous of whom he worships and is angered if harm befalls them. Therefore, if these objects of worship are burned in front of their worshippers, that is the completion of their humiliation and disgrace.
