Exegesis of the saying of Allah the Exalted: “And in that is a trial from your Lord, an immense one”

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
And in that was a great trial from your Lord.
[Al-Baqarah 2:49]
A trial means a test. And regarding His saying:
in thatفي ذلكم
, He used the plural form *dhalikum* even though the demonstrative pronoun is singular, *dha*. Why? We say: because the demonstrative pronoun is based on the thing referred to, and the attached *kaf* is based on the person being addressed. Pay attention to the rule: the demonstrative pronoun is based on the thing referred to, and the attached *kaf* is based on the person being addressed. So if you point to two things while addressing one person, you say: *dhanaka*. Allah said:
for those are two proofs from your Lord
[Al-Qasas 28:32]
And if you point to one thing while addressing two people, what do you say, O Rashad? Where did you go? If you point to one thing while addressing two people, you say *dhalikuma*, just as Yusuf said:
That is what my Lord taught me
Here, what is
And in that is a trial
referring to? One thing; it refers to the punishment. And who is being addressed? A group, because He said:
And [recall] when We saved your forefathers from the people of Pharaoh
[Al-Baqarah 2:49]
His saying
And in that is a trial
means a test and a tribulation from your Lord, who owns the dominion of the heavens and the earth and disposes of you as He wills. For this reason, He said:
a great trial from your Lord.
[Al-Baqarah 2:49]
He did not say “from Allah”; He said:
from your Lordمن ربكم
This is an indication that if He is the Lord, He has the right to do with us what He wills.
immenseعظيم
means immense, great. And truthful is Allah, Mighty and Majestic; it is an immense trial. We ask Allah to protect us from the evil of trials, amen. That is, He sends upon you a slave who slaughters you as he slaughters sheep, and he keeps the women, violating their sanctity, humbling them, and making them servants among them, whereas she was a queen in her home before her guardian was slaughtered. This is an immense trial. We ask Allah for safety. Shall we move on to the questions, or shall we continue?

The questioner : May Allah reward you. What is said...? It is regarding the speech of the Children of Israel...?

The Shaykh : It is not correct, because there is no war between us and them. Yes.
