Benefits of the Verse: “And [recall] when We saved you from the people of Pharaoh, who subjected you to the worst of torment, slaughtering your sons and keeping your women alive, and therein was a trial from your Lord, a tremendous one.”

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Among the benefits of this verse is addressing the latter part of the Ummah with what was a blessing for the first part of the Ummah, as He said:
And [recall] when We saved youوإذ نجينكم
It is known that those in the time of the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) did not experience this salvation directly, but it occurred for their fathers and ancestors. Thus, the good that happened to the first Ummah is realized for the last of this Ummah. Accordingly, we can say: We were victorious at Badr, we were victorious at Hunayn, and we were victorious in the Conquest, because the victory of our predecessors is a victory for us.
And among the benefits of the noble verse is that it is obligatory for the later generations of the Ummah to thank Allah for His blessings upon the first generation of the Ummah, because Allah the Exalted mentions this to them so that they may fulfill their duty of thanking Him.
And among the benefits of the noble verse is that Allah may allow some people to have power over others, as He allowed Pharaoh to have power over the Children of Israel. This is the Sunnah of Allah with the first and the last. Therefore, when Allah Mighty and Majestic said:
Say, "He is the [one] Able to send upon you affliction from above you قل هو القادر على أن يبعث عليكم عذابا من فوقكم
[Al-An'am 6:65]
the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
I seek refuge in Your Faceأعوذ بوجهك
He said:
or from beneath your feet أو من تحت أرجلكم
[Al-An'am 6:65]
He said:
I seek refuge in Your Faceأعوذ بوجهك
He said:
or to confuse you [so you become] sects and make you taste the violence of one another أو يلبسكم شيعا ويذيق بعضكم بأس بعض
[Al-An'am 6:65]
He said: This is easier, or he said: This is milder. Undoubtedly, it is easier and milder, because a person in what he is tested with from the unseen may defend himself and it may result in his victory. But if a command comes from Allah from above or from below, he cannot do anything about it. Therefore, the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
This is easier, or he said: This is milder هذه أيسر أو قال هذه أهون
.
And among the benefits of this noble verse is the clarification of the intensity of Pharaoh’s anger against the Children of Israel, where he inflicted this punishment upon them. What is it? Slaughtering the sons and keeping the women alive. This is undoubtedly a great humiliation, whether for the dead or the living—may Allah grant us safety and well-being.
And among the benefits of the noble verse is that Allah the Exalted tests a person with what he dislikes so that He, (Exalted and Majestic is He), may know who is patient and who is not patient:
And We will surely test you until We make evident those who strive among you [for the cause of Allah] and the patient, and We will test your affairs. ولنبلونكم حتى نعلم المجاهدين منكم والصابرين ونبلو أخباركم
[Muhammad 47:31]
.
And among the benefits of the noble verse is that it is a requirement of general lordship that a person be tested with what he dislikes. In specific lordship, Allah the Exalted mentions what a person loves, while general lordship encompasses what the servant dislikes and what the servant loves, as He said:
And in that was a great trial from your Lord. وفي ذلكم بلاء من ربكم عظيم
[Al-Baqarah 2:49]

And among its benefits is the greatness of this trial that befell the Children of Israel, and likewise if it were to befall others, it would be a tremendous trial. A mother witnessing her son being killed before her eyes or slaughtered as a sheep is slaughtered, and a daughter witnessing her father being treated in this manner, is undoubtedly a tremendous trial.
