Benefits of the Verse: “Then We forgave you after that, so that you might be grateful”

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
And among the benefits of the second verse is the clarification of Allah the Exalted’s favor upon the Children of Israel. After they did what they did of this shirk (associating partners with Allah), which was based on misguidance in religion and foolishness in intellect, Allah forgave them,
Then We forgave them ثم عفونا عنهم
.
And among the benefits of this noble verse is that Allah the Exalted forgives all sins without exception, but only after repentance, as Allah the Exalted said:
Say, "O My servants who have transgressed against themselves [by sinning], do not despair of the mercy of Allah. Indeed, Allah forgives all sins. Indeed, it is He who is the Forgiving, the Merciful." قل يا عبادي الذين أسرفوا على أنفسهم لا تقنطوا من رحمة الله إن الله يغفر الذنوب جميعا إنه هو الغفور الرحيم
[Az-Zumar 39:53]
.
But if someone were to say: “There is nothing in the noble verse indicating that they repented?”
It is said: The other verse indicates that they repented to Allah the Mighty and Majestic, and turned back to Allah. And that a cloud took them, and they were commanded to kill one another. When Allah knew from them the sincerity of their return to Him, and that they obeyed even to the point of killing, Allah forgave them.
And among the benefits of this noble verse is that whoever Allah has blessed with a religious blessing must give thanks for it, just as he must give thanks for a worldly blessing, due to His saying:
Then We forgave you after that so perhaps you would be grateful. ثم عفونا عنكم من بعد ذلك لعلكم تشكرون
[Al-Baqarah 2:52]
Which of the two is a greater favor? Without doubt, the religious one is the greater favor. So if Allah has blessed you with a religious blessing, consider it among the greatest of blessings and give thanks for it. And giving thanks for religious blessings is of the same kind as the blessing itself. For example, if Allah has blessed someone with knowledge, then among the ways of giving thanks for Allah’s blessing upon him is that he should learn and spread knowledge. Likewise, if Allah has blessed someone with wealth, then among the ways of giving thanks for Allah’s blessing upon him with this wealth is that he should give charity from it, benefit the poor, maintain family ties, and be dutiful to his parents.
And among the benefits of this noble verse is the affirmation of causes for the actions of Allah. From where are they taken? From His saying:
so that you may be gratefulلعلكم تشكرون
And there is no doubt for us in this that all the actions of Allah and the rulings of Allah are all based on causes and benefits, but some of them are known and some are not known. As for the one who says: “The actions of Allah and His rulings are not based on wisdom and are not attributed to a cause,” there is no doubt that he is misguided in his religion and foolish in his intellect.
