Do some agricultural machines, such as plows and others, require zakah?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The questioner : Do some agricultural machines, such as plows and others, require zakah?

The Shaykh : There is no zakah on a plow if a person uses it for himself or uses it for hire. However, if he is a merchant who trades in these machines, buying and selling them, then he must pay zakah on them. This zakah is called zakat al-'arud (zakah on trade goods).
The rule regarding zakat al-'arud is that anything a person prepares for trade is subject to zakah. As for what is prepared for use, such as a taxi, a passenger car, a transport vehicle, and likewise machines, plows, water pumps, and the like, there is no zakah on them. However, gold and silver are an exception to what is used, for zakah is obligatory on what is used of them, such as a woman's jewelry, according to the stronger opinion indicated by, indeed, indicated by, the Qur'an and the Sunnah, as we explained in our small treatise titled "Zakat al-Hilal", and as chosen by Shaykh 'Abd al-'Aziz ibn Baz, the school of Abu Hanifah, and a narration from Imam Ahmad (may Allah have mercy on him). Yes.

The questioner : May Allah bless you.
