The questioner : May Allah preserve you, O honorable Shaykh. Allah, Glorified and Exalted, says:
(4) So woe to those who pray (5) [But] who are heedless of their prayer -
[Al-Ma'un 107:4-5]
We ask for the meaning of this verse and the benefits contained in it. May Allah reward you with good.

The Shaykh : The meaning of the saying of the Exalted:
(4) So woe to those who pray (5) [But] who are heedless of their prayer -
[Al-Ma'un 107:4-5]
Because His saying: {
[But] who are heedless of their prayer -
[Al-Ma'un 107:5]
} means they are heedless and neglect it. One of them prays after the time has passed, or prays without tranquility, or perhaps prays without ritual purity, and the like of that neglect.
Allah, Mighty and Majestic, threatens these people with woe, which is a word of threat. And Allah, Blessed and Exalted, said in another verse:
(59) But there came after them successors who neglected prayer and pursued desires; so they are going to meet evil - (60) Except those who repent
[Maryam 19:59-60]

As for those who are heedless in their prayer, there is no sin upon them, just as if a person forgets and adds a rak'ah, or forgets and leaves out the first tashahhud, for example, then there is no sin in that. This is due to the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) when he made a mistake:
Verily I am a human being like you, I forget just as you forget.
Sahih Muslim 572j
For this reason, some scholars said: Praise be to Allah who did not say: "those who are heedless in their prayer," but rather said: "those who are heedless of their prayer." There is an apparent difference between the two expressions. Yes.
