Continuing the discussion on the hadith (… that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Whoever drags his garment out of arrogance, Allah will not look at him on the Day of Resurrection…”)

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : Then the author mentioned the hadith of Ibn 'Umar and the hadith of Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) regarding letting the garment hang below the ankles. Letting the garment hang below the ankles occurs in two ways. The first way is dragging the garment out of arrogance, and the second way is letting the garment hang below the ankles, whether out of arrogance or not. As for the first one, the one who drags his garment out of arrogance, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) mentioned three punishments for him, refuge with Allah,
to whom Allah will not speak on the Day of Resurrection nor will He look at
Sunan Ibn Majah 2208Sahih (Darussalam)
meaning: a look of mercy
nor purify him, and he will have a painful punishment
Allah will not speak to him, nor look at him, nor purify him, and he will have a painful punishment
four punishments, we ask Allah for safety, by which he is punished if he drags it out of arrogance. When Abu Bakr heard this hadith, he said: “O Messenger of Allah, one of the two sides of my garment sags over me unless I hold it up” meaning: does this warning apply to me? He said:
You are not one of those who do that out of pride.
Sunan an-Nasa'i 5335Sahih (Darussalam)
So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) certified Abu Bakr, certifying him that he does not do this out of arrogance. The punishment is for the one who does it out of arrogance. As for the one who does not do it out of arrogance, his punishment is lighter. In the hadith of Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him), the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) said:
But whatever is lower than the ankle is in the Fire
Sunan Ibn Majah 3573Sahih (Darussalam)
and he did not mention more than one punishment. Then this punishment also does not encompass the whole body; rather, it is specific to the part where the violation occurred, which is what hangs below the ankle. If a person’s garment, shirt, or trousers hang below the ankle, he is punished for this hanging part with the Fire, and the Fire does not encompass the whole body; rather, he is branded with the Fire, refuge with Allah, to the extent of what hangs down. Do not be surprised that the punishment is for part of the body where the violation occurred, for it is established in the two Sahihs that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) saw his Companions performing ablution without doing it thoroughly, so he called out at the top of his voice: “Woe to the heels from the Fire.” Here he made the punishment for the heels, meaning the ankles, which they did not perform ablution thoroughly for. So the punishment by the Fire can be general, such as a person being burned entirely by the Fire, refuge with Allah, and it can be for part of the body where the violation occurred, and there is no strangeness in that. And by this, we know the weakness of the statement of al-Nawawi (may Allah have mercy on him) that letting the garment hang below the ankles out of arrogance is forbidden and disliked for other than arrogance. The correct view is that it is forbidden for what hangs below the ankles, whether out of arrogance or not. In fact, the correct view is that it is one of the major sins, because major sins are every sin for which Allah has made a specific punishment specific to it, and this has a specific punishment with the warning of the Fire if it is for other than arrogance, and it has the warning of the four punishments if it is out of arrogance: Allah will not speak to him on the Day of Resurrection, nor look at him, nor purify him, and he will have a painful punishment. The author concluded what we want to read today with the hadith of Abu Dharr that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) said:
There are three to whom Allah will not speak on the Day of Resurrection nor will He look at them or purify them, and theirs will be a painful torment.
Sunan Ibn Majah 2208Sahih (Darussalam)
He recited it three times. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) did this so that the person would pay attention, because when the wording comes in a general form, especially with repetition, the person pays attention: what is this? So when the detail and explanation come, it returns to a mind that is eager to seek the explanation. So Abu Dharr said: “O Messenger of Allah, they have failed and lost. Who are these?” He said:
the dragger of lower garment, the recounter of obligation the seller of goods by false oath.
Sahih Muslim 106a
The one who lets his garment hang, meaning the one who drags his garment out of arrogance. The second is the one who shows off, who boasts about what he gave. If he does good to someone with something, he boasts to him: I did this for you, and I did this for you, and I did this for you. Showing off is one of the major sins because of this warning upon him, and it nullifies the reward, by the saying of the Exalted:
O you who have believed, do not invalidate your charities with reminders or injury
[Al-Baqarah 2:264]
And the third is the one who sells his goods with a false oath, meaning the one who swears while lying to increase the price of the goods. He says: “By Allah, I bought it for ten,” while he did not buy it for less than eight. Or he says: “I gave ten for it,” while he did not give less than eight for it. Meaning he says: it cost ten, while it did not cost less than eight. He swears to this, so he is among those who deserve these four punishments: Allah will not speak to him on the Day of Resurrection, nor look at him, nor purify him, and he will have a painful punishment. We ask Allah for safety, and Allah is the One who grants success.
