Yes.
The questioner : Your Eminence, may Allah forgive you, what is your opinion regarding a person who has missed obligatory fasts to make up, and he encounters the Day of 'Arafah or the Day of Ashura, and he wants to fast that day and postpone making up the missed fasts?
The Shaykh : We see that there is no harm in it, meaning there is no harm in a person fasting the Day of 'Arafah or the Day of Ashura while he has missed fasts to make up, because the time for making up the fasts is extended until there remains in Sha'ban an amount equal to the number of fasts he owes.
But we prefer that he start with making up the fasts and fast the Day of 'Arafah with the intention of making up the fasts, and perhaps if he fasts it with the intention of making up the fasts, he will obtain two rewards: the reward of fasting the Day of 'Arafah and the reward of making up the fasts.
As for fasting the six days of Ramadan in Shawwal, one does not attain their reward unless he has completed the fasting of Ramadan, because the six days are attached to Ramadan, due to the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family):Jami` at-Tirmidhi 759Sahih (Darussalam).
