The discussion regarding the prohibitions of ihram.

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds, and may Allah send prayers and peace upon our Prophet Muhammad, and upon his family and his Companions, and upon those who follow them with excellence until the Day of Judgment.
As for what follows:
This is the ninety-first of the weekly gatherings that take place every Thursday, and this day is the twenty-seventh of the month of Dhul-Qa'dah in the year 1415. The discussion in this gathering will be on the prohibitions of ihram.
The prohibitions of ihram are: the things that become forbidden because of ihram, because every act of worship has its prohibitions. For example, in prayer, speech is forbidden; in fasting, eating and drinking are forbidden; Hajj has prohibitions, meaning things forbidden because of it. So the prohibitions of ihram are the things prohibited because of ihram. We begin first with what Allah (Mighty and Majestic) mentioned:
so whoever has made Hajj obligatory upon himself therein [by entering the state of ihram], there is [to be for him] no sexual relations and no disobedience and no disputing during Hajj فمن فرض فيهنّ الحجّ فلا رفث ولا فُسوق ولا جدال في الحجّ
[Al-Baqarah 2:197]

These are three things, all of which are to be avoided in Hajj. However, the first is specific to Hajj and is shared by some other acts of worship, while the second and third are general. Open sinfulness is always prohibited, but it is emphasized in Hajj. The quarreling referred to here is the kind involving contention and trying to overpower the other; it is prohibited at all times and in all circumstances. So what is rafath?
Rafath is sexual intercourse. This is the primary meaning, as Allah the Exalted said:
It has been made permissible for you the night preceding fasting to go to your wives أحلّ لكم الصّيام الرّفثُ إلى نسائكم
[Al-Baqarah 2:187]
meaning: so there is no sexual intercourse in Hajj. And sexual intercourse is the greatest of the prohibitions of ihram.
If a person has sexual intercourse before the first tahallul in Hajj, five things result from his intercourse:
The first is sin, the second is the invalidation of the ritual, the third is the obligation to complete it, the fourth is the obligation to make it up in the following year, and the fifth is a camel that he slaughters and gives all of it in charity to the poor.
This is what results from sexual intercourse before the first tahallul. What is related to this prohibition? Intercourse, looking with desire, contracting marriage, and proposing marriage are all related to this because they are preliminaries to intercourse. For this reason, it is forbidden for the person in ihram to have intercourse with his wife for the sake of desire, whether by kissing or otherwise.
Likewise, it is forbidden for him to repeat looking with desire.
It is also forbidden for him to contract marriage. So the person in ihram does not marry, nor is he married off, nor does he propose. And it is forbidden for him to propose, meaning to propose to a woman while he is in ihram, because of this hadith, that is, because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
A Muhrim must neither marry himself, nor arrange the marriage of another one, nor should he make the proposal of marriage. لا يَنكح المحرم ولا يُنكح ولا يخطب
Sahih Muslim 1409a

Among the prohibitions of ihram in the Qur'an is shaving the hair of the head, based on the saying of Allah (Blessed and Exalted is He):
And do not shave your heads until the sacrificial animal has reached its place of slaughter ولا تحلقوا رؤوسَكم حتّى يبلغ الهدي محلّه
[Al-Baqarah 2:196]
, so it is not permissible for the person in ihram to shave his head until he exits ihram.
The scholars (may Allah have mercy on them) included the hair of the rest of the body with the hair of the head, such as the mustache, the pubic hair, and the armpits. Some of them added the nails and said: "It is not permissible for the person in ihram to trim his nails".
So we return now and look at what has been mentioned among the prohibitions:
Sexual intercourse, intercourse for the sake of desire, looking with desire, especially with repetition, the fifth is contracting marriage, the sixth is proposing, the seventh is shaving the hair of the head, and the hair of the rest of the body is included with it, and the eighth is trimming the nails.
These are found in the Qur'an, explicitly in the case of sexual intercourse and shaving the hair of the head, and by extension to what was explicitly mentioned, or by analogy, or because it is a preliminary to this prohibition that was explicitly mentioned.
Among the prohibitions of ihram is killing game, which is explicitly mentioned in the Qur'an, based on the saying of Allah (Blessed and Exalted is He):
O you who have believed, do not kill game while you are in the state of ihram. يا أيّها الذين آمنوا لا تقتلوا الصّيد وأنتم حرم
[Al-Ma'idah 5:95]
meaning: they are in a state of ihram.
Among the prohibitions of ihram is also what the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) clarified when he was asked: What does the person in ihram wear? Meaning, what does he wear? He said:
Do not wear shirts or pants, or 'Imamahs, or burnouses, or Khuffs لا يلبس القميص ولا السّراويل ولا العمائم ولا البرانس ولا الخِفاف
Sunan an-Nasa'i 2673Sahih (Darussalam)
: These are five things that are not worn: The qamis is this tunic that we wear like our current clothing. As for the sarawil, it is also known, what is worn instead of the izar. As for the 'imamah, it is what is wrapped around the head. As for the buran, it is a wide, loose garment as they say, and it has a section on the head connected to it, and most of those who wear it are the Maghrebis.
As for the khuffayn, they are "boots". These are five things that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) explicitly stated that the person in ihram does not wear.
Is anything else included with them?
We say: Yes, what is like them or more so is included with them. For example, the qamis includes "the vest", "the coat".
The sarawil includes short sarawil, which is known as thigh-length sarawil. As for the 'imamah, the ghutrah and the taqiyah are included with it, because they are head coverings like the 'imamah.
As for the buran, the mashal is included with it because it is the closest to it.
And these five things that the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) explicitly stated, he said:
He does not wear لا يلبس
: Based on this, if a person wraps himself in a qamis without wearing it, there is no harm, because he did not wear it. And if he sews an izar with stitching, there is no harm, because it does not exceed being an izar even if it is sewn.
And it remains for us to ask: Does he wear socks, meaning "sharab"?
The answer is: No, because they are the equivalent of the khuffayn.
Does he wear a watch on his hand?
The answer is: Yes, because when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) said:
He does not wear لا يلبس
, we learned from this that he wears what is other than that.
Okay, does he wear eyeglasses?
Yes, because they do not fall under what the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) explicitly stated.
Does he wear an earring in the ear?
Yes.
Does he wear a ring?
Yes.
Does he wear "a belt"?
Yes, the important thing is that he wears everything other than what is mentioned in the hadith or what is equivalent to it.
Among the prohibitions of ihram is perfume. The evidence that it is among the prohibitions of ihram is that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) said regarding the man who was gored by his camel at 'Arafah:
Ibn Abbas (Allah be pleased with them) reported that there was a person in the state of Ihram whose camel broke his neck and he died. Thereupon the Mes- senger of Allah (ﷺ) said: Bathe him with water mixed (with the leaves of) lote tree and shroud him In his two (pieces of) cloth and cover neither his head nor his face, for he would be raised on the Day of Resurrection pronouncing Talbiya. اغسلوه بماء وسدر، ولا تخمّروا رأسه ولا تحنّطوه، فإنّه يبعث يوم القيامة ملبّيا
Sahih Muslim 1206f
, and the hanut is the perfume that is placed on the dead person, and this indicates that all types of perfume are not permissible for the person in ihram. And he (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) said:
Do not wear a garment that has been touched by saffron or weld لا تلبسوا ثوبًا مسّه الزّعفران ولا الورس
, and based on this, it is forbidden for the person in ihram to use perfume on his body and to use perfume on his ihram clothing. Likewise, using perfume on his bed is forbidden, so he does not sleep on a bed that has perfume in it. Likewise, using perfume in his food and drink is forbidden, so he does not drink coffee that contains saffron as long as its scent is present. Also included is using perfume in his washing, so some soap has perfume that appears on the person when he washes with it, so this is not used. As for perfume that has only a pleasant, refreshing scent but is not perfume, there is no harm in that. For this reason, we tell the person in ihram that you may eat oranges and mint and the like, even though they have a strong, pleasant scent.
Among the prohibitions of ihram is covering the head with any covering, based on the saying of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him):
Do not cover his head لا تخمّروا رأسه
meaning: do not cover it, whether it is in a handkerchief, a ghutrah, a taqiyah, or something else. But the scholars (may Allah have mercy on them) said: "It is permissible for the person in ihram to carry his luggage on his head because this is not customary for covering", and it is permissible to take shelter under a tent. Likewise, according to the stronger opinion, it is permissible to take shelter under an umbrella, a roofed car, and the like, because this is not covering but rather taking shelter, and what is prohibited is covering the head.
Among the prohibitions of ihram is wearing gloves for the man and the woman. So the woman does not wear gloves, and neither does the man.
And she does not wear the niqab, meaning she does not wear a veil over her face. But if there are men around her who are not her mahrams, she must cover her face, because it is not permissible for a woman to uncover her face to non-mahrams or to anyone other than her husband.
