The questioner : In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
His EminenceThe Shaykh : What is the authenticity of the hadith:? We see some people reciting Surat Yasin at the grave, circling around the grave and reciting Surat Yasin, and some of them call the adhan inside the grave. What is the ruling on that?
The Shaykh : As for the hadith:Bulugh al-Maram 537, it is weak. If it is weak, we are relieved of it, meaning: we do not act upon it. And according to the opinion of those who said: it is a good hadith, it is not recited at the grave, but rather it is recited at the time of death (when the person is dying). It has been said: that reciting it for the dying person facilitates the exit of the soul because of what it contains of the mention of the reward for the people of Paradise and the bliss, such as His saying: [Ya-Sin 36:26-27] and His saying: [Ya-Sin 36:55], and it increases a person's faith in the resurrection, such as His saying: [Ya-Sin 36:78-79].
In any case: if the hadith is authentic, the intended meaning is to recite it for the dying person. And what indicates this is that the Sunnah of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) clarifies some of it with other parts of it. It has not been reported in any instance that he recited Yasin at the grave, nor that those who descend to the grave recite it. Rather, he used to say: When he finished burying the dead, he would stand over him and say:Sunan Abi Dawud 3221Sahih (Al-Albani).
