Tafsir of Surat al-Kawthar.

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, and upon his family and all his Companions.
As for what follows: This is the one hundred and fifth session of the Open Door, which takes place every Thursday of every week, and this Thursday is the twenty-fifth of the month of Jumada al-Ula, in the year one thousand four hundred and sixteen.
We begin this session by speaking about what is facilitated regarding the Surah:
(1) Indeed, We have granted you, [O Muhammad], al-Kawthar. (2) So pray to your Lord and sacrifice [to Him alone]. (3) Indeed, your enemy is the one cut off.
[Al-Kawthar 108:1-3]
:
It is said that this Surah is Meccan, and it is said that it is Medinan.
Meccan refers to what was revealed before the migration of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) to Madinah, whether it was revealed in Makkah, in Madinah, or on the road during travel. Everything revealed after the migration is Medinan, and what was revealed before it is Meccan. This is the stronger opinion among the scholars.
Allah the Mighty and Majestic says, addressing the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family):
Indeed, We have granted you, [O Muhammad], al-Kawthar.
[Al-Kawthar 108:1]
: Al-Kawthar in the Arabic language means abundant good. And so it was that Allah the Exalted gave the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) abundant good in this world and the Hereafter. Among that is the great river in Paradise, from which two spouts flow into his Pool of Return (peace and blessings be upon him). Its water is whiter than milk, sweeter in taste than honey, and more fragrant than musk. This Pool is in the plain of Resurrection, and the believers from the Ummah of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) will drink from it. Its vessels are like the stars of the sky in number and beauty. Whoever follows his Shari'ah in this world will drink from his Pool in the Hereafter, and whoever does not follow his Shari'ah will be deprived of it in the Hereafter. We ask Allah to let us and you drink from his Pool and to quench our thirst from it.
And among the abundant goods given to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in this world is what is established in the two Sahihs from the hadith of Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him), that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
I was given five things that were not given to any prophet before me: I was supported by terror for a month's journey, and the earth was made for me a mosque and a place of purification, so whenever prayer comes upon a man from my Ummah, let him pray. I was given intercession, and lawful spoils were made lawful for me. And the Prophet was sent to his people specifically, and I was sent to all people generally.
: This is part of the abundant good, because his being sent to all people necessitates that he has the most followers among the prophets, and indeed he does. He is the one with the most followers, peace and blessings be upon him.
And it is known that the one who guides to good is like the one who does good. And the one who guided this great Ummah, which surpassed the nations in number, is Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him). Accordingly, the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) has a share of the reward of every one of his Ummah. And who can count the Ummah except Allah the Mighty and Majestic?
And among the good given to him in the Hereafter is the Praiseworthy Station, and from it is the Great Intercession. Indeed, on the Day of Resurrection, the people will be afflicted with distress and sorrow that they cannot bear, so they will seek intercession. They will come to Adam, then Noah, then Abraham, then Moses, then Jesus, until it reaches the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family). He will stand and intercede, and Allah the Exalted will judge between the servants by his intercession. This is a station for which the first and the last will praise him. It falls under the saying of Allah the Exalted:
it is expected that your Lord will resurrect you to a praised station.
[Al-Isra 17:79]
.
So al-Kawthar means abundant good, and among it is the river in Paradise. The river in Paradise is al-Kawthar without doubt, and it is called Kawthar, but it is not the only thing that Allah gave His Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) from good.
And when He mentioned His favor upon him with this abundant good, He said:
So pray to your Lord and sacrifice [to Him alone].
[Al-Kawthar 108:2]
: In gratitude to Allah for this great blessing, that you pray and sacrifice for Allah. The meaning of prayer here is all prayers, and the first to be included is the prayer accompanied by sacrifice, which is the prayer of 'Id al-Adha. But the verse is comprehensive and general:
So pray to your Lord
the obligatory prayers, the voluntary prayers, and the prayers of 'Id and Jumu'ah.
and sacrifice وَانْحَرْ
Meaning: draw near to Him by sacrifice. Sacrifice (nahr) is specific to camels, while slaughter (dhabh) is for cattle and sheep. But He mentioned sacrifice because camels are more beneficial than others for the poor. For this reason, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) offered one hundred camels as a gift during his Hajj. He sacrificed sixty-three of them with his own hand, and gave the rest to 'Ali ibn Abi Talib, who sacrificed them. He gave charity with all their parts except a piece from each she-camel, which he took and put in a pot and cooked. He ate of its meat and drank of its broth, and ordered charity even with their saddles and their skins, peace and blessings be upon him. The command is for him and for the Ummah. So it is upon us to be sincere in prayer for Allah and to be sincere in sacrifice for Allah, as our Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was commanded.
Then He said:
Indeed, your enemy is the one cut off.
[Al-Kawthar 108:3]
: This is in contrast to the giving of al-Kawthar. He said:
Indeed, your enemy is the one cut off.
[Al-Kawthar 108:3]
: Your hater, meaning your one who hates you. And shan'an means hatred. From this is the saying of Allah the Exalted:
And do not let the hatred of a people for having obstructed you from al-Masjid al-Haram lead you to transgress
[Al-Ma'idah 5:2]
Meaning: do not let your hatred of them lead you to transgress.
And He said:
and do not let the hatred of a people prevent you from being just
[Al-Ma'idah 5:8]
Meaning: do not let your hatred of them lead you to abandon justice. So the Blessed and Exalted said:
Be just; that is nearer to righteousness
[Al-Ma'idah 5:8]
.
So
your enemy شَانِئَكَ
in His saying:
Indeed, your enemy
means: your hater.
is the one who is cut off هُوَ الْأَبْتَرُ
: Al-Abtar is a superlative name, from batar meaning to cut off. It means: he is the most cut off, the one severed from all good. This is because the disbelievers of Quraysh used to say: Muhammad is al-Abtar, there is no good in him and no blessing in him, nor in following him. They called him al-Abtar when his son al-Qasim (may Allah be pleased with him) died, saying: Muhammad is al-Abtar, he will not have a child, and even if he has one, his lineage is cut off. So Allah the Mighty and Majestic made clear that al-Abtar is the one who hates the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him). He is al-Abtar, cut off from all good, in whom there is no blessing, and whose life is regret for him. And if this is the case for the one who hates him, it is also the case for the one who hates his Shari'ah. So whoever hates the Shari'ah of the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him), or hates any of the symbols of Islam, or hates any obedience by which people worship in the religion of Islam, he is a disbeliever, a disbeliever who has exited the religion. This is due to the saying of Allah the Exalted:
That is because they disliked what Allah revealed, so He rendered worthless their deeds.
[Muhammad 47:9]
, and there is no nullification of deeds except by disbelief. So whoever hates the obligatory prayers is a disbeliever, even if he prays. And whoever hates the obligatory zakah is a disbeliever, even if he prays. But whoever finds it heavy without hating it, this is a characteristic of hypocrisy, but he does not become a disbeliever. And there is a difference between one who finds something heavy and one who hates something.
So this verse contains an explanation of the favor of Allah upon His Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) by giving him abundant good, then the command to be sincere to Allah the Mighty and Majestic in prayers and sacrifice, and likewise in all other acts of worship, then the explanation that whoever hates the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) or hates anything of his Shari'ah, he is the one who is cut off, in whom there is no good and no blessing.
