The questioner : In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds, and may peace and blessings be upon the noblest of the prophets and messengers, our Prophet Muhammad, and upon his family and all his Companions.
We hear some people, when they move from bowing, for example, to prostration, continue reciting the supplication said after bowing until they touch the ground or come close to touching it. What is the ruling on this action?
The Shaykh : Indeed, Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) said in His Book:[Al-Baqarah 2:229] The prayer is defined, and every pillar in it has a specific supplication. When a person rises from bowing, he says: Then he prostrates, and during the descent from standing to prostration, he says: Allahu Akbar. So the remembrance for this descent is: Allahu Akbar. As for this man who continues the supplication of standing while descending into prostration, I do not know when he will say the takbir. If he says it when he prostrates, it means he said it in the wrong place. So, may Allah reward you with good, advise him, and say: Complete the supplication of standing, then descend into prostration saying Allahu Akbar. This is the Sunnah.
The questioner : What is the ruling on that?
The Shaykh : The ruling on that is that he should be advised and informed. Some scholars say: If he does not say the takbir between standing and prostration, his prayer is invalid. But we do not say that it is invalid; rather, we say: Advise him and explain to him the correct way.
