What is the interpretation of the saying of Allah the Exalted: “And you did not throw when you threw, but Allah threw”?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The questioner : His EminenceThe Shaykh : What is the interpretation of the saying of Allah the Exalted:
And you threw not, [O Muhammad], when you threw, but it was Allah who threw وَمَا رَمَيْتَ إِذْ رَمَيْتَ وَلَكِنَّ اللَّهَ رَمَى
[Al-Anfal 8:17]
?

The Shaykh : Yes,
And you did not throw وما رميت
means: you did not strike their faces with the pebbles that you sent upon them.
when you threw إذ رميت
means: you sent the pebbles. So the first “throwing” means: hitting.
but Allah threw ولكن الله رمى
: He hit them. How many times did “throwing” repeat?
The student: Three times.

The Shaykh : The first “you did not throw” means: you did not hit their faces.
when you threw إذ رميت
means: you sent the pebbles. This is the action of the Messenger.
but Allah threw ولكن الله رمى
What? He hit them. Because it is known that when the Messenger sent pebbles at a people far from him, it is customary that these pebbles do not reach their faces or the earth, but Allah is the One who made them reach them. Is it clear? Did it become clear to you or not? Good.

The questioner : ...

The Shaykh : No, actually, if we interpret it as we mentioned, there is no problem. “Throwing” is used for hitting, and it is used for the action. So His saying:
you did not throw ما رميت
, the negation here is of the hitting:
when you threw إذ رميت
, the affirmation is of sending the pebbles or the earth:
but Allah threw ولكن الله رمى
, the hitting. And there is no problem. Yes, let’s move to the left.
