The reciter: Abu Bakr ibn Ishaq narrated to me, Abu al-Yaman narrated to us, Shu'ayb narrated to us from al-Zuhri, who said: Urwah ibn al-Zubayr informed me that Aisha, the wife of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), informed him:
That the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to supplicate in prayer: "O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the punishment of the grave, and I seek refuge in You from the trial of the Dajjal, and I seek refuge in You from the trial of life and death. O Allah, I seek refuge in You from sin and debt." She said: A person said to him, "O Messenger of Allah, how often you seek refuge from debt?" He said: "If a man incurs debt, he speaks and lies, and promises and breaks his promise." The Shaykh: In this hadith, there is an omission regarding what precedes it and an addition to it. As for the omission, it does not mention seeking refuge from the punishment of Hellfire. As for the addition, it is his saying: "O Allah, I seek refuge in You from sin." Sin: the sin, it is a verbal noun with a prefixed mīm, and sin occurs by leaving an obligatory act or by committing a forbidden act. And debt: the loss, that a person incurs a debt, a liability, or something else that he owes to people. So the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) sought refuge in Allah from that. A person said to him—it is possible that it was her or someone else: "O Messenger of Allah, how often you seek refuge from debt?" He said: "If a man incurs debt, he speaks and lies, meaning he says: I have money or something similar, or he denies what he has. And he promises and breaks his promise: he says, 'I will come to you with your right tomorrow,' but he breaks his promise because he has nothing. Therefore, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sought refuge in Allah from that in prayer. It was not specified where this supplication takes place, but it will come to us, if Allah wills, the clarification that this supplication is at the end of the prayer, in the final tashahhud.
