The Place of the Supplication: “O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the punishment of Hell…”

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
This is a questioner, Umm Aml from Yanbu‘, who included this message with a collection of questions. She says: “Your Eminence, when are these supplications recited: ‘O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the punishment of Hell, from the punishment of the grave, from the trial of life and death, and from the trial of the Dajjal (the false messiah)?’ Are these supplications recited in the obligatory prayers, or in the regular voluntary prayers after finishing the tashahhud and before the taslim?”

Answer:
This seeking of refuge is recited in the obligatory prayer and the voluntary prayer, in the final tashahhud before the taslim, after the salutations and after the prayer upon the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). The person recites this seeking of refuge: “I seek refuge in Allah from the punishment of Hell, from the punishment of the grave, from the trial of life and death, and from the trial of the Dajjal (the false messiah),” after the prayer upon the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in the final tashahhud before he says the taslim. This applies to men and women, in the obligatory and voluntary prayers. This is prescribed (mashru‘). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) taught the Companions to do this in the obligatory and voluntary prayers. He said:
When any one of you utters tashahhud (in prayer) he must seek refuge with Allah from fourإذا تشهد أحدكم فليستعذ بالله من أربع
Sahih Muslim 588a
He (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
When one of you performs the tashahhudإذا تشهد أحدكم
meaning: in the final tashahhud
he must seek refuge with Allah from fourفليستعذ بالله من أربع
Sahih Muslim 588a
Then he mentioned them—peace and blessings be upon him—whether the prayer was obligatory or voluntary. Yes.

The presenter: May Allah reward you.
