I have an aunt who is a fortune-teller, and she always gives us money or food, knowing that this is her source of income. What is our obligation toward her and her money?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The questioner : I have an aunt who is a fortune-teller, and she always gives us food or money, knowing that this is her source of income. The money she gives us comes from this work. What is our obligation regarding this? Is there anything forbidden in this money? What should we do with the money she gives us? Is it permissible for us to accept it? Please advise us. May Allah reward you with good.

The Shaykh : Your obligation toward this woman is to advise her and warn her of Allah (Mighty and Majestic), and to tell her that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade the payment to a fortune-teller. Any earnings a person obtains from a forbidden work are forbidden. If she stops, that is what is required. If she does not stop, your responsibility is discharged from its consequences. If she gives you a gift from what she has earned, and returning it serves a benefit such that she would be ashamed and deterred from this work, then return it. If there is no benefit in that, there is nothing wrong with accepting it, because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) accepted gifts from the Jews, who are known for taking riba (usury or interest) and consuming illicit wealth.

The questioner : May Allah bless you.
