Fatwa number ( 8607 )
Q: I am an employee in one of the government departments, and I receive a salary of (2981) riyals. I have a father who wants me to give him some of the salary I receive, but I am unable to do so because I bought a car and am paying off its installments, with each installment being (2000) riyals. I have a sister who gives him (850) riyals monthly, and he has a shop where he buys and sells foodstuffs. He wants money from me, but I am unable to provide it, even though he drinks intoxicants and wants me to give him money. Is it permissible for me to give him money, given that he might use the money I give him to buy intoxicants? If I do not give him money, he will kick me out of the house and say:
If you do not give me money, get out of the house. My sisters do not give him money except after great difficulty. Please advise me on this question, may Allah reward you and settle you in the spacious Paradise?
A : If the situation is as described, that he drinks intoxicants, and he has what is sufficient for his lawful needs—then treat his companion in this world with kindness, and be good to him with what is easy for you, from things that he cannot spend on what is forbidden; for example, give him clothing or a bag of rice, or something that serves as household furniture, such as a rug or utensils. Smile at him and speak to him with soft, generous words, and the like of kindness and good conduct, while advising him to stop drinking intoxicants and all other forbidden things. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
